“LOVE SONGS, LANKAN STYLE” – by Des Kelly I chanced to hear this video and decided that THIS was a type of music that would be enjoyed by all the good members of e’Lanka, everywhere. They are a Dutch band, this group called The Locomotions, and I had never even heard of them, but then, my forte’ being American 80’s and 90’s style Country Music, I tend to feature legends like Merle Haggard, George Jones and the like, but suddenly, as I was watching You-Tube Music Videos, The Locomotions popped up, and, as I do, I decided that because we are now in “Escape-Mode” in Melbourne, after weeks of Lock-down, this was a good time to get the folk back dancing to some good music, so here they are, my friends, “The Locomotions Compilatie Love Songs”, especially for you. “GARDEN HUMOUR” – By Des Kelly Thank you, Charles, for your “drift-back” into the good old days of gardening, as we knew it, well, you probably do anyway, because, while I always enjoyed a good garden, personally, even a weed that I decided to plant, for whatever reason, would not grow. They say that opposites matter however, and the beautiful gardens of our homes were always the work of my ex-wife Cynthia, R.I.P. She loved gardening, so, being an understanding husband, I always left her to do what she enjoyed doing. She knew that, as a gardener, I was a good guitarist. Unfortunately, it was just a little bit too late for this writer, who is, right now, the “guru” of isolation simply because my legs and feet refuse to let me walk more than a few metres because of an ailment that has got to be pronounced while totally sober. “STORMS NEVER LAST” – By Des Kelly One of my favourite Country songs, written and composed by the beautiful Jessi Colter, and dedicated to her husband, the late great Waylon Jennings who passed on, after suffering the complications of diabetes on the 13th of February, 2002, aged 65. Waylon Jennings was one of the famous “Outlaws Quartette”, the Highwaymen, who also featured Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. Like so many “Stars” of Stage and Screen of this bygone era, Waylon had three failed marriages before he met Jessie Colter. Jessie was not only beautiful, she was multi-talented as well, played piano, sang and composed great songs. When she wrote Storms Never Last, the lyrics she continued with, were, do they Waylon ?, but this had to be changed, and the word “baby” substituted, because they realized that others would want to record this ...

“MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THESE” – By Des Kelly Coming to e’Lanka via Gerard Salomon and Keith Bennett, for which we thank them, is this wonderful video of a duo of supremely talented “Stars” of the silver screen, namely Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire, the latter being definitely the Best Ballroom Dancer of his era and beyond, and the former, (although Ginger Rogers was Fred’s main dancing partner), in my own humble opinion, Rita Hayworth was, by far, one of his most beautiful partners in their dancing sequences on film. In addition to dancing, Rita, who was, I believe, Fred’s favourite dancing partner, and who can blame him, hit the movies with spectacular films such as “Cover-Girl”, in which she also danced with Gene Kelly, one of Fred’s main competitors, in hoofing it, to put it mildly. “TEXAS TORNADO DOUG. SAHM” – By Des Kelly A child prodigy on Steel-Guitar at age 6, Douglas Sahm went on to become the Founder of the Sir Douglas Quintet, although he was never ever knighted, but simply liked the sound of that name, going on to later add the late great Freddy Fender & Flaco Jimenez to his group of which Augie Meyers was also a member, and called themselves The Texas Tornados. Sadly, Doug was found dead of natural causes in a hotel room alone, aged just 58 years old, and Freddy Fender, another well-known entertainer also died, a few years after Douglas Sahm, surrounded by his family, after suffering lung cancer. He was only 69 years old. The Texas Tornados became famous also, for their Tejano-style music, mostly sung in Spanish. ...

“The La Ceylonians” – By Des Kelly It’s been quite a while since I heard one of the original Ceylon Bands led by Maestro Noel Ranasinghe, but Wallah!!, out of the blue, so to speak, while watching music on you-tube, this great song titled “Tharuna Jeewithe’ Ape’ Vinodayen” came up, and I must say that I enjoyed the presentation of the song so much, I decided to feature it on e’Lanka. This particular version was published on April the 11th, 2015, by Kamal Gunaratne, and, so far has earned a hefty 33 thousand views. Not bad at all, for any song. You and Me – by Lalith Paranavitana Introduction by Des Kelly Listened to the song, a very difficult one to sing, and one that was possibly chosen by “The Voice”, himself. Many changes of key involved, plus lyrics that only experts like Sinatra could sing meaningfully. Lalith has produced an excellent cover version of this song, right down to the last note. He has a rich baritone voice, ideal for ballads of this sort, the backing track & production of the song was also very good, so, on behalf of e’Lanka, I would like to congratulate him 100%. If he can produce a video of this song c/w a picture of himself, with his story as per his e’mail, I think that we would be very proud to publish it on e’Lanka. He will have to realize that there are no finances involved, but a donation to e’Lanka would ...
