Sri Lankan Australians in NSW becoming a credible community.   Early migration of Sri Lankans from their native land to Sydney was in the seventies, with a few families settled in earlier. There were about 30 families in Sydney living in the city and the suburbs, and most of them were professionals, teachers, and a few businesspeople. Meeting most weekends to get together and enjoy a good tasty spicy rice and curry was something that we looked forward, to feel home away from home. We had not collected enough money to purchase cars, but public transport was the mode of travel. So, getting down at the closest railway station, walking along the roadside, until the smell of dhal curry and Basmati boiled rice emanated, and that was the signal to spot the location of the home we were visiting for lunch. We never checked the number of the premises, but ...

Colombo 21 (Castle Hill, Sydney) – by Dr. Harold Gunatillake Transcript: Cooking exotic Sri Lankan foods, is it viewed as culture, or a creation of art? I would say it is both culture and art. Culture is derived from the ancient traditions in Sri Lanka, and the art is the way it is presented which is a creation of the Western world. Newly opened Sri Lankan Restaurant in Castle Hill a popular suburb of Sydney, thickly populated with migrants including Sri Lankans seems to be the ideal convenient spot to visit for the food lovers who love Sri Lankan foods. No worries about parking, plenty of spaces in the basement car park. The offerings are plenty to choose from ...

This early stage (pre-diabetic phase) diet and exercise alone will help to control the disease and possibly even reverse. Being having a genetic factor for diabetes or family history, you may need to continue both exercise and strict low GI foods discipline long term. When you are a full blown diabetic due to neglect during the early phase, your doctor will put you on medication to bring down your blood sugar level with food restrictions. Medication alone can control the blood sugar level but may not be able to reverse the diabetic situation unless the insulin resistance is reduced. ...

Importance of knowing the causes of leg swelling-By Dr Harold Gunatillake   This is a common condition that is most prevalent in your 60s and over. If you observe the condition you may need to see your health provider for investigation and treatment. Swelling can occur in one leg and foot, or both. If one limb is involved the cause is local in the leg itself, such as lymphatic gland blockage near the groin, blood vessel blockage due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), skin infections, cellulitis and so on. Deep vein thrombosis is a serious condition that occurs when blood clots form in the calf and thigh veins. Early detection and treatment are required before a clot moves from the leg into the lung referred to as pulmonary embolism. The commonest cause is when you sit frequently without much leg movements as travelling on a plane, the venous blood flow ...
