SRI LANKA NEWS (MARCH  2024) Compiled by Victor Melder The Headline inflation, as measured by the year-on-year (YoY) change in the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI, 2021=100)1 decreased to 5.9% in February from 6.4% in January 2024. The Central Bank said the increase in the headline inflation is mostly in line with its projections.  It said the Food inflation (YoY) increased to 3.5% in February from 3.3% in January 2024, while the Non-Food inflation (YoY) decelerated to 7% in February from 7.9% in January 2024.  CBSL also said the monthly change of CCPI recorded -0.05% in February due to the combined effect of price decreases of 0.67% observed in the items of Food category and price increases of 0.62% observed in the items of Non-Food category. SRI LANKA NEWS (DECEMBER  2023) Compiled by Victor Melder Sri Lanka’s inflation, as measured by the change in the Colombo Consumers’ Price Index (CCPI) marginally increased to 3.4 percent in November 2023 from 1.5 percent in October, the Department of Census and Statistics reported Thursday. The CCPI for all items for the month of November 2023 increased to 193.4 from 191.4 in October 2023. The Year on Year inflation of Food Group increased to -3.6 percent in November 2023 from -5.2 in October 2023 and the Year on Year inflation of Non Food Group increased to 6.8 percent in November 2023 from 4.9 percent in the previous month. For the month of November 2023, on year‐to‐year basis, contribution to inflation by food commodities was -1.20 percent and the contribution of Non Food items was 4.56 percent. Sri Lanka›s tourism industry continues to thrive as arrivals have exceeded 600,000, showcasing the resilience and appeal of the country as a travel destination.  Despite being the off-peak season, the daily average of tourist arrivals has shown remarkable improvement, exceeding 3,200 visitors. Sri Lanka’s inflation, as measured by the change in the Colombo Consumers’ Price Index (CCPI) declined to 50.6 percent in February 2023 from 51.7 percent in January, the Department of Census and Statistics reported Tuesday. The CCPI for all items for the month of February 2023 marginally increased to 189.5 from 188.6 in January. The Year on Year inflation of Food Group decreased to 54.4 percent in February from 60.0 percent in January and the Year on Year inflation of Non Food Group increased to 48.8 percent in February 2023 from 47.9 percent in the previous month. For the month of February 2023, on year‐to‐year basis, contribution to inflation by food commodities was 17.23 percent and the contribution of Non Food items was 33.36 percent. The Police Narcotics Bureau in operations conducted in 2022 along with other security forces agencies has arrested 46,258 people related to drug offenses. During the raids conducted in 2022, 1,548 kg of heroin were seized. The value of the seized heroin is over 20.9 billion rupees. Also, the police have raided around 200 places near schools where drugs, intoxicants, intoxicating toffee chocolates and other sweets were sold. Police continue to conduct these raids on information received that the school students are addicted to various types of drugs including ice (crystal methamphetamine) drugs, narcotic pills and intoxicating sweets. SRI LANKA NEWS – DECEMBER 2022 – By Victor Melder Sri Lanka owed Chinese lenders $7.4 billion – nearly a fifth of its public external debt – by the end of last year, calculations by the China Africa Research Initiative (CARI) showed, an estimate higher than many others. The figure was above the “often-quoted 10 to 15 percent figures,” the study said, adding a “significant portion” of the country’s debt to China had been recorded under lending to state-owned enterprises rather than central government. Crisis-hit Sri Lanka is in the midst of a debt restructuring after years of economic mismanagement combined with the COVID-19 pandemic saw the country plunge into the worst economic crisis since independence from Britain in 1948 and tip into default.
