In an encouraging milestone for the nation’s macroeconomic trajectory, official data released by the Export Development Board (EDB) reveals that Sri Lanka’s total export earnings, encompassing both merchandise and services, surpassed USD 9 billion during the first half of 2026. Reaching approximately USD 9.01 billion between January and June, the cumulative performance marks a commendable year-on-year growth rate of roughly 8% compared to the corresponding period in 2025. This robust expansion has been warmly received by apex business chambers, including the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL), which has publicly commended the EDB and the country’s diverse manufacturing and service sectors for their resilience, adaptability, and unwavering dedication in competitive international markets.

Comprehensive Breakdown of First-Half Performance

A granular examination of the economic indicators provided by the EDB illustrates a well-balanced contribution from both traditional and non-traditional sectors. Merchandise exports, comprising agricultural, industrial, and fisheries products, generated USD 7,073 million during the first six months of the year, representing an impressive year-on-year growth of approximately 8.95%. Simultaneously, service exports, which include information technology, business process outsourcing (BPO), tourism-related services, and maritime logistics, accounted for approximately USD 1,939 million, reflecting a steady 4.49% expansion.

Particularly noteworthy was the momentum sustained in June 2026, during which total exports were provisionally estimated between USD 1,658 and USD 1,659 million. This single-month performance delivered a striking 12% to 12.5% year-on-year surge compared to June 2025. Merchandise exports in June alone reached approximately USD 1,314 million, registering a robust 15.09% increase, while services added roughly USD 344.5 million to the national tally. Such figures underscore the efficacy of strategic export diversification policies and the proactive engagement of Sri Lankan enterprises in forging deeper international trade partnerships.

Strategic Roadmap Toward the USD 36 Billion Target

Building upon this solid foundation, policymakers and industry leaders have aligned around an ambitious strategic vision: achieving USD 36 billion in total annual exports by the year 2030. Reaching this milestone necessitates continuous structural reforms, enhanced value addition in apparel, tea, rubber, and coconut industries, and aggressive scaling of high-value technological and digital services.

The FCCISL has emphasized that sustained public-private collaboration will be instrumental in overcoming external supply chain volatilities and tariff fluctuations. By streamlining regulatory frameworks, modernising port and logistics infrastructure, and empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to access global value chains, Sri Lanka is positioning itself as a competitive, innovation-driven hub in South Asia. Furthermore, the global Sri Lankan community and expatriate networks continue to play an invaluable role by facilitating international market access, fostering bilateral trade links, and mentoring domestic entrepreneurs.
