The circumstances under which he left for Ceylon were controversial, some writers suggesting that he was compelled to leave France for misbehaviour with young men in his charge. According to William Warren, author of the book “Tropical Asian Style”, de Mauny was first invited to Ceylon in 1912 by SIr Thomas Lipton the tea magnate. Three new Wetlands to be declared under Ramsar Convention this year – Minister Pavithra   Source:Dailynews Irrigation, Wildlife and Forest Conservation Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said that the Wildlife Department has planned to declare three new wetlands in Sri Lanka as wetlands under the Ramsar Convention. The minister mentioned this while speaking to the media on the occasion of “World Wetlands Day” that fell on February 2. The Wildlife Department has planned to designate the Viduthalaithivu Nature Reserve in Mannar district, Adam’s Bridge National Park and the Chundikulam National Park in Jaffna district as new wetland zones in 2024. In that journey the 1818 insurrection or in other words known as the ‘Wellasse Kerella’ occupies a significant place in its history.  In the wake of the failure of that insurrection, two of the insurgents known as Monerawila Keppetipola Disawe and Madugalle Disawe who sought refuge in places such as Anuradhapura and the central hills were subsequently apprehended by the British and though two centuries have since elapsed, that incident is yet etched in memory.  It is said that these insurgents had sought refuge at a village called ‘Parawahagama’ on the Southern border of the Anuradhapura District. Legend of Sri Lanka cricket – Darrell Lieversz Source:Ceylon Then / Sri Lanka Now Facebook Page Darrell Lieversz was a talented swing bowler who captained Royal College in 1962. Darrell made his international debut for Ceylon in 1964 against the visiting Australians. His best bowling performance for Ceylon was against Pakistan in 1964. The Pakistani batsman struggled against his swing bowling during the match and Ceylon registered its first ever “Unofficial” Test win. He was also part of the Ceylon team when it registered its first ever win overseas in 1965 when Ceylon beat India in India in the 2nd ” unofficial” Test match. To this day, Sri Lanka has not defeated India in India in a “Test” or “unofficial Test” match since this match. OBITUARY: JASMINE FERNANDO We regret to announce the death of Jasmin Fernando, the beloved wife of Ruwanal and much-loved mother of Amila, Malinda and Dinuka. Jasmine’s funeral will be held on Saturday, February 17, at Mary Immaculate Church, 125 Barnier Drive, Quakers Hill, NSW. The viewing will be from 10.30am followed by Mass and the burial at Riverstone Cemetery, Cemetery  Road, Riverstone, NSW. Jasmine, an alumni of Holy Family Convent, Dehiwela, was a much loved member of her parish and the community. She and her family supported our college functions in Sydney and she will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
