Bringing the Christmas Cheer on this Christmas day – sent by Charles Schokman Lets you did not know? Many  years  before  the  birth  of  Jesus  Christ,   the  25th.  of  December  was  the  Pagan,s  day  for  sacrifices to their  gods  and  celebrations . Later  on, in  the  year 533 AD ,  the  newly  converted  Christian  Emperor  Constantine  of  Rome  and  head  of  the  Roman  Church  ( today  the  Roman  Catholic Church )  changed  it  to  be  the day  to  commemorate  the  birth  of  Jesus  Christ.  He  called  the  day “ The  Mass  for  Christ “   ie.  CHRISTMAS. CHRIST  in  Hebrew  means  “ The  Anointed  One “  or  “ The  Chosen  One “. Thus  CHRISTMAS  means  “ The  Gathering  of  People  of  Christ “  –  His  Disciples  and  Followers . Somebody stole my Christmas by Capt. Elmo Jayawardena Christmas is special, rather very special.  Everybody looks forward to Christmas. Silent nights and silver bells, mistletoe and pine smells, all wrapped up in wishes and kisses and the hugs and gifts that are so very special at Christmas time.  Looking forward to Christmas is a world wide phenomenon; the mighty and the humble, the rich and the poor, the holy, the unholy and the super unholy, they all await the yuletide. The “haves” revel and the “have-nots” scramble. Yet a celebration is made, no matter how small the purse is or how light the coins jingle in one’s pocket.       I always look forward to Christmas. It’s such a beautiful time. There is always something wonderful about that season. To a point it is imaginary. To be enjoyed more in prospect than in reality. Yet, it is something to look forward ...

Christmas – some reminiscences-by Dr. V.J.M. de Silva Source:Island Introduction – As one who is celebrating his 92nd Christmas, it is with a profound sense of nostalgia that I pen these thoughts. Memories of days gone by, those near and dear, and friends long gone, come crowding in. I feel it all the more, as one who lost his wife and a daughter within a period of one. This year, one can hardly talk of Christmas as a ‘celebration’. The Covid 19 virus disease is certainly playing havoc world-wide. The USA has had 17,000,000 cases and 306,000 deaths; India 10,000,000 cases and 145,000 deaths. Sri Lanka however has had only 34,000 cases and 154 deaths So, what is Christmas all about? Christmas is thought by most to be a wonderful time, focusing the participants on giving, family togetherness, beautiful music and decorations, feasting on special foods and singing Christmas carols. Though every ...

AN INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 2020 It’s that time of year again. December has come and with it all the joys of Christmas. But what is the real meaning of Christmas? Is it the gifts under the tree, the lights in the windows, the cards in the mail, turkey dinners with family and friends, snow in the yard, stockings hanging in the living room, and shouts of “Merry Christmas” to those who pass us in the streets? Is this really Christmas? For many people, Christmas is a time of sorrow. They don’t have the extra money to buy presents for their children, family, and friends. Many are saddened at Christmastime when they think of their loved ones who will not be able to come home for various reasons. Turkey dinners may be only a wish and not a reality for some. Yet, Christmas can be a season ...

Christmas with COVID-19 & beyond Dr Remy Perumal Retired Consultant Physician & Freelance Journalist   This has not been a normal year, anything but. Christmas too will be different! COVID-19 has taken over our lives, our liberties and our way of living. Recent projections of the Pandemic were bleak, dramatic and chilling, forcing another lockdown. In this climate of lingering uncertainty, the traditional family, so embattled by the consequences, will need to tighten its belt. The trimmings at Christmas, the fanfare and festivities, will inevitably be subdued. However, with effective vaccines awaiting approval, there is hope on the Horizon. So,’ it’s beginning to look like Christmas’! Christmas, is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, who is the Son of God. He was born as a human being, in baby Jesus. This period of Advent, leading up to Christmas, provides an opportunity to prepare spiritually, for the coming of Jesus. ...

“SANTA CLAUS EXPLAINED” – By Des Kelly  It is not too far away now.  Christmas eve is only two weeks away, and the jolly fat man will soon be climbing down chimneys everywhere.
