The True Story Behind Handel’s ‘Messiah’ and the Day He Had a Vision of God in Heaven—Mark Martin. For many, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without witnessing or taking part in a performance of Handel’s “Messiah.” From the Virginia Symphony in the United States to the heart of the Holy Land, Jerusalem, the show is felt across the globe. German-born George Frideric Handel moved to London in his late thirties. Handel considered himself an opera composer, but public interest was waning in England, and by 1741 a discouraged Handel wondered if retirement was near. “Some people do think at this point, it was kind of like a career crisis … and it’s quite possible that he was thinking of returning to Germany,” Martin Wyatt, deputy director of Handel House Museum in London, told CBN News. That’s when Charles Jennens handed him the words, or libretto, of “Messiah.” Jennens, a literary scholar, carefully ...

Aftermath of the Festive Season. – By Noor Rahim Alas! The festive season is now a thing of the past – a month to be precise. However, there remains the anticipated reminder for some; when the bills start rolling in. In a month which is known popularly as “The Bottle Selling Month” in Sri Lankan circles. Now that the festive season has passed by, with most of us having rejoiced and partaken in the festivities that is the traditional way with most of us. The time has come to take stock of our memories and track down the cost of such extravaganzas. Yes! It is a time of giving is what they say; and we (most of us that is) went to the extent of indulging in materialistic expenditure, with spiritual expenditure taking somewhat a back seat. But it is indeed an old tradition of “Gift Exchanging” that we so ...

MERRY CHRISTMAS – By Des Kelly My grateful thanks to Chris Lawton, on behalf of e’Lanka, for the story behind one of most famous Carols sung during every Christmas that I can remember, from the year 1950 when I formed my own Carol party at the age of just 14, when I sang this beautiful Carol along with many others, after starting off at Lorensz Rd., Bambalapitiya, covering our local areas on foot, from dusk till dawn, for three nights from the 22nd of December. This particular Carol was always one of our favourites, but I didn’t know the actual story behind the song, so my thanks and best wishes again, to Chris. Desmond Kelly (Mr.Music) (Editor-in-Chief)  e’Lanka.   MERRY CHRISTMAS This song was written over three centuries ago by Isaac Watts in 1719. Isaac Watts (17 July 1674 – 25 November 1748) was an English Congregational minister, hymn writer, theologian, and ...

Our Parents Showed Us The Way At Christmas And Always – By Lawrence Machado All our lives there is someone telling us what to do, some for our own good,  while others can lead us on the wrong path. Fortunately, in the lives of my six siblings – Axie, Rienzie, Sally, Veronica, Belinda, Fortuna – and I, we had amazing parents and grandparents to guide us on the correct path and instill in us lifelong lessons which hold true to this day. It’s particularly nostalgic to remember our loved ones who are no longer with us during Christmas. My happy Christmas memories in Sri Lanka were all thanks to our parents, Rosario and Margaret Machado, who always made sure the birth of Christ was a special and life-changing moment for all of us. I remember fondly Dad and Mum closing their room door to pack our gifts while there was always ...

Something Stupid – By Gehan Gunasekera Just took a break from recording a few Christmas songs, and recorded this favourite of mine, “Somethin’ Stupid”, or “Something Stupid”, a song written by C. Carson Parks. It was originally recorded in 1966 by Parks and his wife Gaile Foote, as Carson and Gaile. The songs didn’t set the world on fire until in 1967 when a version by Frank Sinatra and his daughter Nancy Sinatra became a major international hit, reaching number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the UK Singles Charts. In 2001, a cover version by British vocalist Robbie Williams and Australian actress Nicole Kidman reached number one in the UK Singles Chart. Thank you to Suzie Gee from the KC Group, for the harmony, and the KC Studios for the musical arrangement. Lead Vocal: Gehan Gunasekera Harmony: Suzie Gee Musical Arrangement: KC Studios ...
