CandleAid Lanka – A Time To Share

The December northerly winds are blowing. People all over the world are planning for Christmas. The ‘Haves’ juggle with multiple choices and the ‘Have nots’ lament in a litany of sadness for Christmas to come and go as fast as possible. The sooner it leaves them the better it is and more tolerable the pain would be. Yes, they breathe a sigh of relief that January has arrived, and the Christmas celebration has floated away from their ‘hard earned’ lives.

That is a reality the poor face year in year out. “So, this is Christmas, what have you done?” sang John Lennon. Amidst the grand plans we make, why not think of the birthday we celebrate? Why not figure out a way to give a gift to the Birthday Boy?  No, I am certainly not asking for a donation. I only write to create a simple awareness. Maybe you want to share a little part of your Christmas celebration with someone in need. Someone who is counting the days for the festival to come and go so that they can get back to their daily drudgery of life. Even the children will forget that Santa Claus skipped their ramshackle home and left them out of Christmas. Such is life, nothing new.

If the kindness in your heart is looking for a Birthday Boy to buy a Christmas gift, CandleAid has a project where we select deserving families and gift a bag of dry rations. The people who receive this are the poor. We do not question what race they are and what God they worship. As long as they are poor, we give them a bag of dry rations. We have been doing this as an ongoing project of CandleAid and so far served more the 1300 deserving families through 104 volunteer coordinators spread around the island.
