(By: Noor Rahim – April 1998) How calm and serene they are Looking at the sky with nary a care unruffled by the Hustle & bustle of the roadway & subway Just the sky for a roof they stare away yet how much missed thee are By their loved & dear  ones who really care No matter which way you look & weigh There’s always something good of one to say iw life & death there’s Someone who will always care In life death there’s always something you can share Until it is taken away By the Good Lord who will always have his way So, pause for a moment & do share The serenity of the abode of whoever they are For someday they would have experienced some of your way(s) ...

The World in Turmoil – Ecologically; Spiritually; Economically; and Politically. – By Noor Rahim The World is no more a Garden of Eden. One would have thought that with the advancement of knowledge and Technology it would be “Heaven on Earth”; but alas! It appears that we are far from it. Perhaps to those who have amassed wealth more than they will ever be able to spend themselves, in a life-time, it may be so. But to the ordinary folk it is a “day to day” scenario in life; with no time to see if it is Heaven or Earth. Ecologically; spiritually; economically and politically we seem to be edging closer and closer to the dreaded “Point of No Return” – that is if it is not too late already! Safety; Accidents; & You – By Noor Rahim As intellectual human beings, please pause awhile, and think back to the last time you gave thought to the simple but most important facet of life – SAFETY. Yet, we have the habit of taking things for granted – Don’t we? The word” Safety” has many meanings in the dictionary. But in the context of human beings it would simply mean “SELF SURVIVAL”. In other words it would mean the “will” of an individual to lead a “normal” and “accident free” life. Self -survival is based on pure “common sense”; and dominates our lives from the day we are born to the day we depart this materialistic world. The non-conformity or adherence to safety requirements will invariable lead to an accident be it minor or serious in nature. It is a known factor that accidents do not just occur – it is ...

My ancestors came to Sri Lanka with the Dutch Army which occupied the low country on the behest of the Sinhala King of Kandy to rid of the Portuguese who were occupied the land prior; in the late 16th century and early 17th century. The King could not bear to see his subjects being mistreated cruelly and heaping them with untold misery. Hence, in the early 17th century invited the Dutch to get rid of the Portuguese invaders. Having done so, they occupied all the territories that were occupied by the Portuguese. Peace prevailed during this period. It was in the late 18th century that the Dutch handed ...
