“OLD FOLKS AT HOME” – by Des Kelly We often use the phrase, the good old days, and they certainly were, as far as I can remember. This post might well have already been out on e’Lanka, but it deserves a repeat for all us oldies who have quite possibly forgotten the original posting Thank you, Keith Bennett for sending it in. I have added an old musical backdrop to this story too, so please enjoy. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief). e’Lanka. ...

“THE SOUND OF SILENCE” The truly adequate title of a recording “hit” of it’s era, by Simon & Garfunkel, and the story behind the song, sent in to us at e’Lanka, so a very big “Thank you” to Charles Schokman from all our readers who fully understand the value of any interesting story/stories such as these. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. A Grim Reminder & The Sound Of Silence A humane act  of Today I read a very beautiful story, which I decided to share. It is the story of a poor boy, an American of a Jewish family, from Buffalo, who wins a scholarship at Columbia University. There, he befriends a boy who turned out to be a great friend, and his roommate. But in his freshman year of college, watching a baseball game, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, he went blind.  The doctor said it was conjunctivitis ...

“MUSIC HATH CHARMS” – by Des Kelly This comes to us happily, from Keith Bennett via Charmaine, who has a collection of videos that help us forget the unhappy World around us, if just for a while. On behalf of e’Lanka, I would like to thank both Charmaine and Keith, and advise all our readers out there to spend a few minutes watching what Mother Nature has provided us ordinary humans, to the beautiful back-up Music of the Blue Danube by Johanne Strauss jnr., proving indeed that MUSIC HATH CHARMS. “CONFUCIUS DID NOT SAY” – by Des Kelly   He wished he had, of course, but this time e’ Lanka brings you some of the more humourous (even ribald, depending on how YOU think), sayings, as only HE could do. Makes for interesting reading of course, and we have to remember that a broad smile works on every muscle of the human face, keeping it looking younger than it really is. Please do use your brains to imagine Confucius, complete with that inscruitable look on his countenance, saying things of this nature. As the song says, “Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think”. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. ...

Brillant etymology – by Des Kelly Brilliant, indeed. There is plenty of it, around our World today. To STOW HIGH IN TRANSIT (or SHIT, in short), was quite common, Centuries ago.  What puzzles me is the question that, no matter how much manure was stored below decks, on Ships, how the hell did sea-water get to this shit, in the first place ?. If the sea-water leaked into the bottoms of the Ships where the manure was stored, the said Vessels would have sunk anyway, long before the gas Methane was allowed to form, wouldn’t it ??. While we could call it Etymology (origins of words), your Writer thinks that this particular story was written by an Author unknown, just for something to do in their spare-time. “ONE IS NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW”, and I totally agree, as long as the “STORE HIGH IN TRANSIT”idiom is short ...

“AMERICA ON AUSTRALIA” – by Des Kelly   Occasionally, English Authors, Writers or Poets come up with various quotes that are lessons of life in themselves. This was one of them. “If the grass is greener on the other side, why are you still here” ??. Even though I did migrate to Australia sixty years ago, I still felt that possibly America should have been the place for me, especially because of my love for American-style Country music, and the fact that I could compose songs that would have suited some of the Country Icons to a tee, and what’s more, write them in a matter of hours, rather than days or weeks, in fact, as many of my friends pointed out, I could have made a fortune in America, simply writing songs, but the fact remains that I came to Australia, worked my butt off, doing various other jobs ...

Marital bliss – by Des Kelly An apt title for a touch of humour in e’Lanka, sent in by Keith Bennett, who, like me, believes that a chuckle a day keeps the doctor away. You see folks, as we grow older we do reminisce, (most of us anyway), about those days of Marital bliss. I’ll let these little stories fill you in, anyway. Desmond Kelly (Editor-in -Chief) e’Lanka. ...

“MORE PONDERISMS” – by Des Kelly With my apologies to those who have pondered these ponderisms before, I did ponder on whether to publish these particular “beauties” on e’Lanka again and decided to do so simply because the ponderous pharaphaneliya (yes, I ponder and/or wonder if I have spelt that right), that Keith Bennett sends us from time to time is primarily important for the poshest website (in simple English), in Australia. Also gives me the chance, immediately after Valentine’s day, this year, to dedicate a wonderful song, to whom it may concern, tying in with the above ponderisms. This is how I like them and here’s hoping our wonderful readers will enjoy both the poetic song and the subject as stated above.   Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. Pondering Ponderisms  Why do peanuts float in a regular coke and sink in a diet coke. Go ahead and try it.  I ...
