eLanka – Your Life Choice “SPECIAL” Folks, the “Same-Sex” plebiscite in Oz. is no more, by the look of it. People will not be able to “vote” it in or out, not until 2017 or 2018 at least, so let us now change to “Aged-Sex”which, unfortunately, is right up my alley, especially as I am now “aged” myself and, still being “straight”(?), , found the “Sex and Older Women” very interesting indeed, and the “comments” even more so. This “subject” is fraught with “wide & various positions”, please pardon the phrase. With older women, positions do not matter too much. Tribute to Wally Bastiansz by “the Star of eLanka” Desmond Kelly Also known as “The Godfather of Baila” in Sri Lanka, or Ceylon, at the time I was first privileged to meet him in the famous Suburb of Moratuwa, was Ollington Mervin Bastiansz, aka Wally Bastiansz (1913-1985). As I remember it, Wally was a Police Sargeant, a young-looking 33 (with an old guitar), and me, myself,a much younger”wannabe”entertainer, around 10 years of age. We met at the birthday party of a Sinhala friend of mine, who, with me, was a student at St.Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa, at the time. I remember Wally quite well. He was already very well known as “The baila King”, the original one, (because there have been many of them, since), and I think he was thrilled with the fact that this”Lansi-kolla”had come to the party especially to see him perform. GREYHOUND BAN Anyway you look at it, this was not the easiest of decisions coming the way of the N.S.W. & the Premier with a name that suggests that you’re damned if you do & Baird if you don’t. This is “big news” at the moment. Recently, total greyhound bans were ordered by the Government of N.S.W. after ample proof was submitted to them, that the cruelty to, not only the greyhounds, but the other “live-bait” involved, as well, deserved the toughest penalty available for this so-called “SPORT”. The Premier “bit the bullet”, “bared his teeth”, “barked his order” & ” banned the bloody sport”. When the bans were announced, this writer for one, was 100% pleased and happy that this decision was made. THERE IS NO EXCUSE WHATEVER FOR ANY ANIMAL CRUELTY IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM,NOW OR EVER. SILVER THREADS AMONG’ST THE GOLD A beautiful old song and an apt description of a group of beautiful people who form the Committee of Retirees from one of the very best Companies that I had the pleasure of working for during the 1980’s & into the 90’s, the Pilkington Glass Company, in Dandenong, Melbourne, Australia. The name of the Committee I write about, simply call themselves the “Silverthreads”, the work they continue to do, even after retirement, themselves, certainly have golden flecks amply strewn through the “silver”.They don’t have to do it, but then, in my book, they could also be called “Pilkington-Patriots-Past”. The “Silverthreads”, however, keep on, keeping on. If ever the word “caring” could describe a Company, “Pilkingtons” fit this description like a glove They were a great “bunch” to work for.
