From Kataragama to the land of Gods and legends-by MAHIL WIJESINGHE   Source:Sundayobserver In modern Sri Lanka, Tissamaharama and Kirinda carry far less importance to the average person than Kataragama. Author Paul Wirz called this jungle site on the Menik Ganga ‘the holiest place in Ceylon.’ Pilgrims from all religions flock to the shrines – about 21 kilometres from Tissamaharama – to worship and make offerings. The deity most often associated with Kataragama is Skanda, with six faces and 12 hands, known here simply as Kataragama Deviyo. Buddhists travel to Kataragama mainly to visit the Kirivehera, a great Dagaba one kilometre West of the main shrine where the Buddha is said to have sat in meditation on his third and final visit to Sri Lanka. The seven Hills of Kataragama rise four kilometres South of the holy shrines. ...

“THE KIRK OF DICKOYA”- by Des Kelly There are many stories that are published about Cathedrals and other famous places of worship around the globe, and of course, we are now proud to feature one of our own, that I have chosen to name “THE KIRK OF DICKOYA”. Our thanks go out to both Mahil Wijesinghe, for an excellently scribed story, and Chris Lawton for giving us the chance to ‘show off’ this beautiful little Church, complete with pictures that will bring back many memories to as many people.  Desmond Kelly. (Mr.Music) (Editor-in-Chief).   e’Lanka. ...

The life of Negombo’s Oruwa fishermen-BY MAHIL WIJESINGHE The fishermen just came from the sea Source:Sundayobserver One sunny morning, I was at the Negombo Lagoon to do a photographic essay on the daily life of Karawa fishermen whose Oruwas (sailing boats) take a spectator to a time when man was quite close to the elements and had to battle the forces of nature. The Negombo Lagoon and Duwa is an ideal place to watch fishermen at work. Each morning, except Sunday, fishermen of Negombo, many of them live in the small island of Duwa across the Lagoon, but connected by motorable causeway, bring their daily catch of crabs, prawns, seer and other fish. Then, they mend their nets on the beach. The principal tool of the trade is the Oruwa, a dugout outrigger canoe which bears similarities to those used in the Comoro Islands off Mozambique, Africa. It has been ...

Legend atop a hillock- BY MAHIL WIJESINGHE The Dagaba known as Japanese Sama Chaitya (peace pagoda) Source:Sundayobserver While returning to Weligama from the colonial masterpiece of Galle Fort on the Southern coastal belt recently via the Galle-Matara main road, a hillock, away from the main road, caught our attention. We could spot a small, but elegant Dagaba on the top. Tracing the spot through GPS and enquiry from the roadside vendor we were told it was the Rumassala Kanda – a huge rocky outcrop that derives its name from mythological warrior King Hanuman in the Ramayana. We decided to explore the place even as the friendly vender advised us that the path leading to the base of the hillock is partially motorable and the downward climb is strenuous. What’s more, the sun was beating down mercilessly. Without heeding his friendly advice, we geared ourselves to traverse the narrow carpeted road ...
