“THE OLD C.G.R.” – By Des Kelly I remember the old poem Anguru kaka, watura bibi, kolomba dhuwana yakada yaka, very well. It seems like yesterday, really, and brings back many memories of the old Steam Trains, the Moratuwa Railway Station, a mere stone’s throw away from where I lived, as a toddler, where these magnificent Steam Trains used to have their bellies filled with water from the huge steel tanks (pictured), via equally huge rubber hoses, then, especially as it was just getting dark, we would hear the distinct whistle, as the train driver indicated that he was leaving the Station. Brother Ian was about a year old, and I was just four in 1940, when we were treated to a “firework-show” at eventide each evening, when, out of it’s main smoke turret at the front of the engine, a shower of sparks would burst forth, giving us a ...

A magical world of books – Text and pix: Mahil Wijesinghe Step into the Gamini Hall bookshops wedged among the giant trees at D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha and quench your thirst for reading An array of bookshops along D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha Source:Sunday Observer September is considered a literary month in Sri Lanka. Authors are awarded, volumes of new books published and mega book exhibitions organised to celebrate the month. The ten-day long Colombo International Book Fair at the BMICH opened on September 18. However, this year, the book fair is held under strict health regulations due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the good old days, the Gamini Theatre Hall in Maradana was a popular spot among filmgoers in the Colombo city. But today, it’s no more. Instead the area is popular among bookworms in the city – the Gamini Hall bookshops, comprising a cluster of second hand bookshops located at D.R. Wijewardene ...

A forest enveloped in holiness – Text and pix: Mahil Wijesinghe Source:Sunday Observer A massive rocky boulder at Magul Maha Vihara I first visited the Magul Maha Vihara in 1990 with my mother during one of our regular pilgrimages to Kataragama. Normally, pilgrims to Kataragama make a detour to Situlpahuwa, an ancient Buddhist site in Block I of the Ruhuna (Yala) National Park. The journey was so fascinating in not only visiting ancient ruins of temples but also spotting an abundance of wildlife in the park. On the same road are a range of rocky boulders close to the present-day Palatupana which has been identified in the chronicles with Paluttagiri, known as Magul Maha Vihara today. Since that trip, I’ve returned to the ancient site nearly a dozen times in the past few years, spending each visit observing the hallowed ancient sites. ...

Kudiramalai potography – Text & pix Mahil Wijesinghe SOURCE:Sunday Observer Burnt stone formation on the summit “There is a look-alike place for everyone, somewhere on earth” goes a saying. Have you ever been struck by the uncanny resemblance of a landscape in one place with that of another you visited? As a photographer I have travelled extensively. I photographed the Ussangoda region in Ambalantota in the southern coast, and not so long ago I photographed the Kudiramalai point in the north-western coast of Sri Lanka. I stood there struck by an eerie feeling and felt as if I had been transported hundreds of kilometres back to Ussangoda. Kudiramalai and Ussangoda have the same coppery reddish soil texture and historical and archaeological significance. Kudiramalai   ...
