“A WORLD WITHOUT HAGGARD” – By Des Kelly He was born in America on the 6th day of April, 1937, spent most of his young years breaking out of disciplinary institutions, and later, jails, for insisting that “breaking the law” was something he wanted to do, and did, until he met, for the first time, the man in black, Johnny Cash, in the process of doing a concert especially for jail inmates. Johnny advised this headstrong young man to quit crime and do something worthwhile, rather than spend his entire life behind bars. Merle Haggard decided to take this good advice and ended up as one of the greatest Country-Music Stars that America has ever seen. He died on his 79th birthday, 6th April, 2016. Vince Gill, another famous Star in the American Country Sky, is a superb Session Guitarist, Vocalist, and even more importantly, a Songwriter, penned this tribute ...

“ADVICE FROM ELVIS” – by Des Kelly He was taken away far too early, but as my good friend Chris Lawton also knows, Elvis, like so many “Stars” of Show-biz., also started their careers  singing Gospel songs, giving the World around them sound advice on how to live their lives. This generally came from watching their own parents, grand-parents, etcetera, live life under much more strife than themselves, and still adhere to the words written in the Bible, commonly also referred to, as the Word of God.  Country Stars such as Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, George Jones, and even “Rockers” like Jerry Lee Lewis, all started their careers by recording simple Gospel songs, and although Elvis was the exemption, ribute to Jesus Christ and the Holy Christian Family.  ...

“THE HAG” – By Des Kelly Quite possibly, one of the best know names in “Country Music”, certainly, one of my top favourites, he was a Songwriter, Singer, fiddle-player, and guitarist, all in one, and, like so many other great Country Icons of America, had a tough life, not only before he became a “Star”, but even after~ when many pretty young ladies (he married five of them), gave him a hard time, trying to keep him toeing the line, which he refused to do, even when it was for his own good. I have always admired Merle Haggard, God rest his Soul, as he died exactly 79 years after he was born, he passed on to the old Opry in the sky, on his 79th birthday.           There are definitely many more amazing things about this guy, who will always be fondly remembered ...

LETS PRETEND – By Des Kelly “Pretend you’re happy when you’re blue,        it isn’t very hard to do”, go the lyrics of a famous song from ages past. I could go on, and sing the whole song for you, the Lord knows, I have sung it, many times, but folks, it was much easier to “pretend” in the good old days. Back in the ancient past, when I was a boy, in the “Ceylon” that I knew, there were certain days of the week set aside just for “pretending”. I am sure that I wasn’t the only one to do this, but, on these days, from morning to night, wherever I went, whatever I did, I used to pretend that I was “acting” the role. Because I wanted to be an entertainer, from a very early age, including the time I was “on-stage”, around 1945/6, singing “kunuharapa-baila”, ...

“TRIPLE TALENT” by Des Kelly  Two words, not often associated with their true meaning. A “talent”, IS, however, often associated with “a legacy” left by parents to their children, in my own case, my dear Mum,  God rest her soul, was a prize-winning “vocalist” during her School years, in Ceylon (of course). Through my “writings” for H.M.S.eLanka (Her Majesty’s Ship),our Captain, Neil Jayasekera, & lowly Vice Captain,(myself), have decided to, firstly, delete the word “Vice”(I am too old for any of that), & substitute the prefix “Co”, making me therefore a bloody “Co-Captain”. Where was I going with this ?, what the ! ?. Oh, yes, it was “talent” we were talking about. “okay, Sir”!       Secondly, whenever & wherever possible, my “stories” for eLanka will feature “You-Tube” clips, as an added “entertainment”, if you like, for “on-line” members of our good Ship eLanka. If you are not a member, ...

I”LL BREAK OUT AGAIN, TONIGHT by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’   “Country-Music Star” Merle Haggard was probably in jail, when he decided to write this song. I have recorded a “Cover”, dedicated to him. The lyrics are self-explanatory. Tells the story. “SLOWLY, THE LONG DAY TURNS TO NIGHT AND SOON, THEY’LL TURN OUT THE PRISON LIGHTS BUT, IN MY CELL I’M MAKING PLANS TO BE WITH YOU AGAIN, TONIGHT THESE WALLS & BARS CAN’T HOLD A DREAMING MAN SO, I’LL BE THERE, TO TUCK THE BABIES IN THEY CAN CHAIN MY BODY BUT NOT MY MIND AND, I’LL BREAK OUT AGAIN, TONIGHT. THE WARDEN THINKS I’M IN, FOR LIFE COS, ALL HE’S EVER SEEN ME WEAR IS “STRIPES” HE DON’T KNOW ABOUT MY BLUE SUIT & MY TIE THAT I WEAR, WHEN I’M ALONE WITH YOU EACH NIGHT THESE WALLS & BARS CAN’T HOLD A DREAMING MAN SO, ...
