Tribute to Dr. Gamini Goonetilleke Source:ft.lk The launch of the second book about a dedicated surgeon’s experiences in the war zone took place at the auditorium of the College of Surgeons at Torrington Place before a packed audience on 7 April. Guest Speaker was former High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Australia S. Skandakumar. Here are excerpts from his speech. When my Sandhurst-trained brother-in-law Maj. Gen. Balaratnarajah, one-time Commander of the Volunteers, and Chief of Staff, of the Army said to me that there was a Sri Lankan doctor doing some amazing work with their injured soldiers, I could not have imagined that 30 years later, I would be speaking at the launch of that surgeon’s second book, the “Extra Mile”. Dr. Stanley Abeysekera Much has already been written about this book which was first published in December, 2020, and gone for two prints in 2021 January and April. Most of the write ups and comments have been positive. The book, which has been referred to as a “historical narrative,” had been initiated by the late Rev. Fr. Stanley Abeysekera and compiled and completed by a young Josephian referred to as “the youngest historian, researcher of his school” (p. 245) by Dr. Sheila Fernando. I am not an authority on Josephian history nor connected at all with St. Josephs College like the reviewers before ...

‘Josephian Carols’ renewed hope for a community in distress St. Cecilia’s Choir of St. Joseph’s College   Source:dailymirror.lk Undaunted by Covid restrictions and undeterred by intermittent closure of schools, St. Cecilia’s Choir of St. Joseph’s College went on to conduct the annual Carols Service in all its splendour, whilst adhering to all mandatory health regulations. Aptly titled “Verbum Caro” (and the Word was made Flesh), the central theme of the sacred event focused on the stupendous Christian mystery of the Son of God coming to Earth as a fragile babe in order to endure the pangs of our human existence. Held in the evening of December 18, at the vast Rev. Dr. Abeysekere Auditorium, as the solemn entrance procession made its way in, bearing the statue of the Infant Jesus, the Choir chanted the traditional Christmas antiphon, “Jesu Redemptor Omnium”, enhancing the rendition with a four-part chorus.  After the Opening ...
