DESMOND KELLY

“A RAY OF HOPE” Quite a beautiful “Title” to begin 2023 with, is this little story sent in by Chris. Lawton, which I feel should be seen by each and EVERY ONE of our Members and readers of e’Lanka. Around 70 years ago, I was a Serving member of the Royal Ceylon Navy, drafted to H.M.CyS Elara, at Karinagar, where our Navy meals were really nothing to write home about, and the drinking water was even worse, tasting very much like the Indian Ocean that surrounded us, when quite suddenly, my Dad called me on the telephone to find out how I was going, and I briefly mentioned my complaints to him, wherupon, he gave me this advice, which I have followed to this day.. Dad told me to somehow get and eat at least ONE egg EVERY DAY. How I cooked them didn’t matter, even if I had to ...

“Tom T. Hall – Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine” – By Des Kelly The Story-teller was his nickname, born in 1936 and passed on in 2021, Country Singer Tom T. Hall was also a song-writer who wrote many of the songs he performed throughout his career. He was sometimes considered ‘a hard-task master’ who expected nothing less than perfection from any musician that was called upon, to back him, and, rather than being upset about this, all these Musos appreciated the fact that here was a ‘master’ passing on his ability to them. Please listen to, and enjoy the Story-Teller, Mr. Tom T. Hall. & may he now rest in peace. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)  e’Lanka. ...

NEVER TRUST A CRICKETER – By Desmond Kelly. The title tells the story. Written by the wife of a Cricketer, who prefers to be anonymous (for obvious reasons), this poetic justice (or injustice depending on how you look at it), was kindly sent to me by Chris Lawton OMI who doesn’t play cricket anymore, but still has a wry sense of humour about the game, forwhich we thank him. Please read it, guys & dolls, balls & all,& tell us how you enjoyed this candid dislclosure of her husband and & his cricketing mates.    Desmond Kelly. (Mr.Music) (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. Come all ye fair young maidens, harken unto me! Never trust a cricketer, whoever he may be. Randier than a sailor who’s been six months at sea, Never let a cricketer’s hand an inch above your knee. First let’s take the paceman, pure speed from first to last, My darlings do ...

” LIFE, A TRAIN JOURNEY” – By Des Kelly On watching this meaningful, beautiful, and to top it off, Musical train journey, backed by the memorable voice of Susan Boyle, I found myself thinking of my very first train journey, from the little Suburb of Moratuwa, in my Lovely Island Home,Ceylon, all the way to Nuwara Eliya, the Scenic Capital of the World, as far as I was concerned, anyway. I remember it so well. I rode on the engine itself,  driven by my dear late Uncle Fred de Kretser, of the C.G.R.,& helping the ‘fireman’ to keep the log fire in the engine going, could well be the dream of ANY lad of around eight, and there I was. Just as the ‘train of life’ is, this wasn’t an express train, and it stopped at nearly every Station, on the way, so we could buy a few ‘masala or ...
