VALE’ MELROY PASSE’ De SILVA – By Des Kelly Photo Souce: Sooriya Very sadly, I now pass on this news to everyone who knew him, a most simple, humble guy, yet truly, one of the VERY BEST GUITARISTS to have left our lovely Island Home, to settle with his family in Keysborough, Melb., Victoria, many years ago.           With due respect to many other superb Sri Lankan players of this instrument, now living in Australia, I have to say that although I had heard about Melroy performing his magic together with Gazali Amit (another guitar-great), at the Galle-Face Hotel, in the heart of Colombo, I did not have the privilege of knowing him personally ...

“BRITISH ROYALTY”. By Des Kelly Now that we hopefully have this latest Pandemic ALMOST beaten, our News-Media around the World starts to realize that, in the not too distant future, they may not have too many more “Pandemic- Posts” to perplex people with, anymore, so where do we go, from here ??. Oh yes, British Royalty has always been around when needed, so why not introduce some blurb on them to start off the post-pandemic prose, if we can call it that. Talking about exaggerating aspects of World News ?, let us look at it, right now. Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth the 2nd is 95 years old now, the longest reigning Monarch, having even overtaken her worthy ancestor, the former Empress of India, Queen Victoria who ruled the Commonwealth of Nations, on her own, after the death of her Prince Albert, at a very early age. Contrary to what ...

KOREAN NEWS ABOUT INDIA – By Des Kelly           Yet another extremely interesting video comes to e’Lanka from Charles Schokman, this one narrated superbly by this Korean Broadcaster, on INDIA. As I always say, “we live and learn” and never has it been so apt, as it is, right now. Firstly, she mentions her name briefly, just as the video closes, but, in my opinion, this young Korean woman would be very difficult to replace as a Broadcaster in any Radio Station in the World. Clear and precise, not an “umm” or an “ah” ejaculate to spoil the narration, this young lady tells us all about “Mother India”, fascinating facts that most of us would not have otherwise known.            Now that we DO KNOW so much about India, the “Power to be”, I do look forward to yet another video, this ...

This is one to be enjoyed by those who are either Cooks or not, and your’s truly comes within the latter category. It is no bloody wonder that India is also now becoming a super-power. When you can cook like these guys in the video, you could call yourself a Super-Chef, but, enough with the introduction folks, Just watch this video and lets congratulate these Indian Chefs.           Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) eLanka. ...

“MILLER’S MOONLIGHT” – by Des Kelly    Going back a while, and getting away from Country Music, for a while, I am very proud to introduce this You-Tube video of famous American  Female Vocalist, Children’s Author, Song-writer and Entertainer par-excellence Carly Simon, now in her 70s and still going strong, by the look of it, singing one of her many hits, as a special guest on-board the Queen Mary 2, luxury liner, the Glenn MillerTheme Song “Moonlight Serenade” and doing a superb job of it, backed by the Ship’s Orchestra, doing an equally fine job, on a tune that is both catchy, melodic and unforgettable. ...

“A WORLD WITHOUT HAGGARD” – By Des Kelly He was born in America on the 6th day of April, 1937, spent most of his young years breaking out of disciplinary institutions, and later, jails, for insisting that “breaking the law” was something he wanted to do, and did, until he met, for the first time, the man in black, Johnny Cash, in the process of doing a concert especially for jail inmates. Johnny advised this headstrong young man to quit crime and do something worthwhile, rather than spend his entire life behind bars. Merle Haggard decided to take this good advice and ended up as one of the greatest Country-Music Stars that America has ever seen. He died on his 79th birthday, 6th April, 2016. Vince Gill, another famous Star in the American Country Sky, is a superb Session Guitarist, Vocalist, and even more importantly, a Songwriter, penned this tribute ...

“COUNTRY ROYALTY” – by Des Kelly   He died at 64 years of age, in 2002, after having suffered multiple complications of the dreaded diabetes, yet another cursed disease inflicted on humankind, and especially on those who have, what is called a “sweet-tooth”. Waylon Jennings, was first discovered by the Guitar-Genius Chet Atkins, who noticed this handsome young guy, singing and playing his special guitar, rock-style, at a Club, somewhere in the good old U.S.A. Chet (Chester) Atkins, in my own humble opinion,is another member of Country Royalty in that, to me, he was undoubtedly the BEST Lead/Rhythm guitarist in the World, of his era, and few will argue that he continues to be the same as years go by. (R.I.P. Chet.) ...

“BOUNTIFUL BANANAS” – by Des Kelly Source: https://www.poemhunter.com/poem/banana-7/           We used to call them Plantains in Ceylon of the good old days, as I remember them. There were many wonderful varieties, like Kohlikuttu, Aana-maalu, Suwendel, etcetera, and I even remember the tiniest plantain which was named the Sugar-banana by the British, I suppose, because this is where the name “Banana” came from. Being a fruit that was readily available back home, I became very fond of them and would sometimes make quite a meal of them, buying beautiful combs of the fruit, ripened to exactly how much I preferred them to be, from the banana palace in Wellawatte, for just a couple of rupees, per comb.  I loved to choose bananas that were not over-ripe in the slightest, because once they started to show brown spots on the peel, the fruit would very quickly lose their ...

“KINROSS KATASTROPHE”.- Des Kelly   While feeling a bit sad about it, I would like to thank Maxie Gerreyn for sending me the story and disastrous photographs of the old Kinross Swimming and Life-saving Club, because my brother Ian, who has been re-christened by Max, and named Mala-Kelly, was once the Captain of Kinross, as I remember it, and did his share of life-saving there, including this writer himself, who is, by all accounts, a much better singer than a swimmer, and once (or twice, to be exact), swam out to the reef, over there, about 500 yards away from the shore in Wellawatte, because the waves of the Indian Ocean practically carried me to my destination, and then, much to my consternation, found that I could not swim back to the shore, which, for some reason, seemed to be miles away. I swam and swam, ...

“MUSIC HATH CHARMS” – By Des Kelly   He was one of the most highly rated “Comics” of his era, his one-liners, on—stage, will never be forgotten, once heard. He would relate a story in detail, an example being how one of his friends made an impromptu  appointment with a doctor on a particular day, AT a particular time, etc., begging of his neighbour for a “ride” to the doctors, because his own car had broken down and was in the process of being repaired, even as they spoke. He would then speak of the repair shop, and “yaba yaba yaba”, until his friend, simply to stop him talking so much, said “ok, ok, OK., hop into my car and I will take you for your appointment”  . He gets in the car, and is strangely silent, until he is in his doctors room. He complains to the doctor that ...
