Report: On July 5, 2023, Wednesday morning, the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Minister for the Arts, and Leader of the House in the House of Representatives, Hon Tony Burke MP, engaged in a breakfast meeting with a community delegation. The delegation included Canterbury-Bankstown City Council Mayor Bilal Al Hayek, former Deputy Mayor Khodr Saleh, senior Labor Party leader Hassan Quraishi, and MA Yusuf Shamim, the Editor-in-Chief of the only Bengali newspaper published in Australia. The event, hosted by Sheikh Ridwan Akawi, leader of the Koranic Society, took place at a restaurant in the Punchbowl area. The objective of the meeting was to discuss various issues affecting the local community. During the discussions, Sheikh Ridwan Akawi brought attention to the need for speed breakers on Haldon Street in the Lakemba area. He emphasized that speeding vehicles posed a danger to pedestrians, particularly at the corner of Haldon Street and Railway Parade, opposite Lakemba Musalla. Former Deputy Mayor Khodr Saleh highlighted the significant development that has taken place in Lakemba over the past decade. He expressed hopes for further infrastructural improvements in the area. Hassan Quraishi emphasised the necessity of a multi-story car park in Lakemba, stressing the need for increased parking space. He called upon the Minister and Mayor to seriously consider this matter. M.A. Yusuf Shamim addressed the issue of rising criminal activities in the Lakemba area. He proposed the installation of additional CCTV cameras and street lights as crucial measures to combat crime. Furthermore, he suggested increasing police patrols, particularly bicycle patrols, as this would enhance safety and boost citizen confidence. Shamim also proposed restricting the hours for alcohol purchase and sale, citing successful examples in other regions like Alice Spring, Tennant Creek, and Katherine. By implementing similar measures in Lakemba and the greater Bankstown-Canterbury area, it is believed that crime rates could be reduced. During the discussion, Mayor Bilal attentively listened to the proposals put forth by the delegation. Minister Tony Burke actively participated in the conversation and expressed his gratitude to everyone present. As breakfast was served, the Minister took a moment to peruse the recently published July issue of Suprovat Sydney and commended the publication for its contributions to the community.
