In the heart of Sri Lanka’s Uva Province lies a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by travelers seeking panoramic views and natural beauty. The Porawagala Viewpoint, nestled in the town of Bandarawela, offers an awe-inspiring experience that captures the essence of the island’s picturesque landscapes.

Nestled amidst the green landscapes of Sri Lanka’s Uva Province, Porawagala Viewpoint is located just 3 kilometers east of Bandarawela railway station and bus stand, Porawagala sits atop a hill, boasting an elevation of 1,330 meters (4,360 feet) above sea level. Its strategic position offers a bird’s eye view of the picturesque town of Bandarawela, enveloped by lush forests, rolling hills and expansive valleys, all set against the backdrop of sprawling tea plantations and the city of Ella itself.

Porawagala is easily accessible, situated about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) east of Bandarawela railway station and bus stand. For a small entry fee, visitors can enjoy the viewpoint throughout the day. However, the best time to visit is at the break of dawn or during sunset when the sky is painted in hues of orange and pink, casting a magical glow over the landscape. During these moments, the beauty of Porawagala is heightened, creating an atmosphere of unparalleled serenity and enchantment. The tea estates that blanket the valley create a patchwork of green hues, that look like a giantess has sewn them for her bedsheets in a magical fairytale. The cool mountain breeze carries with it the scent of fresh tea leaves, adding to the sensory experience of being immersed in nature’s embrace.

Vehicular access

Thew viewpoint is easily accessible by vehicle, and the site has been maintained beautifully by the Bandarawela Pradeshiya Saba (Divisional Council) Staff. There are unbelievably clean bathroom facilities and a shop to buy Knick knacks. The whole garden is beautifully landscaped with seating areas and lovely spaces to take photos with the valley sprawling below. There is a steel bridge that runs on one side, which allows the visitors to walk over the valley and take in the view from above.

A small pond has been built on one side with artistic statues of people, trees with flowers and two elephants. The elephants stand majestically gazing over the valley and mountainside. There is ample parking area, and the staff are very helpful and friendly.

The viewpoint offers a serene retreat from the chaos of urban life, inviting travelers to indulge in moments of tranquility. The valley is dotted with beautiful paddy fields and a temple sits far on the hillside. If you are in luck you will see the train run through the tunnel and you can follow it all throughout the valley below as it weaves in and out of the hills and trees. Tiny cottages dot the hillside and birds sing around you. It is in essence a truly beautiful and tranquil location.

Porawagala’s secluded location adds to its allure, offering a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Here, amidst the serene surroundings, travelers can bask in the tranquility of nature, rejuvenating their spirits and rejuvenating their minds.

For those keen on delving deeper into the region’s rich history, Porawagala offers the opportunity to explore the nearby tea plantations. These estates, steeped in tradition and heritage, provide insights into Sri Lanka’s renowned tea industry, allowing visitors to witness firsthand the process of tea cultivation and production.
