The Vesak program organised by the Queensland Buddhist Association was held with great dignity and grandeur on the evening of May 13, in the auditorium of the Queensland Parliament.
The main feature of the event was the honouring of ten individuals who had made outstanding contributions towards the development and promotion of Buddhist activities in Queensland.
These award recipients were selected by organisations and Buddhist institutions from several Asian Buddhist countries including India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, and Vietnam. From the Sri Lankan community, those honoured were the Chief Incumbent of Sri Lankaramaya Temple, the Most Venerable Watthegama
Dhammavasa Thero, the Maha Nayaka of the Shasana Jothika Sangha Sabha of the Udarata Amarapura Nikaya, and Mr. Rahu Sarathchandra, who dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the construction of the temple and played a pioneering role in establishing the Queensland Buddhist Association.
All the monks of Sri Lankaramaya participated in this noble occasion. In addition, two monks visiting from Korea and several lay devotees also attended the ceremony.
Honourable Andrew Powell MP, Minister for Environment and Tourism, Minister for Science and Innovation presented the awards.
