Colombo’s skyline has acquired a new landmark, and City of Dreams Sri Lanka is marking its first anniversary after a year that placed the capital more firmly within the regional conversation on luxury hospitality, entertainment, business events and integrated tourism.
The landmark development, developed by John Keells Holdings and operated through a partnership with Melco Resorts & Entertainment, formally opened in early August 2025. Its first anniversary, observed on 2 August 2026, has been accompanied by a month-long programme of culinary and hospitality experiences, providing an opportunity to reflect on the project’s significance for Colombo and for Sri Lanka’s evolving tourism proposition.

A new architectural presence in Colombo
The physical scale of City of Dreams Sri Lanka had already altered the appearance of Colombo before the development welcomed its first guests. Rising beside the Beira Lake, the complex presents a striking combination of glass façades, elevated structures, terraces and illuminated public areas, creating a distinctive urban presence amid the capital’s established commercial and residential districts.
The development was originally introduced as Cinnamon Life Integrated Resort before adopting the City of Dreams Sri Lanka identity. It represents one of the most ambitious private-sector investments in Sri Lanka’s tourism and hospitality history, and was conceived as a destination in which accommodation, restaurants, entertainment, retail, business events and lifestyle experiences could operate within a single connected environment.
That integrated model is particularly important in a city such as Colombo, where visitors have traditionally divided their time between business appointments, hotels, restaurants and separate cultural or entertainment venues. City of Dreams offers a more consolidated experience, enabling leisure travellers, corporate guests, conference delegates and local visitors to access a broad range of facilities without leaving the precinct.
According to Melco Resorts & Entertainment’s official property information, City of Dreams Sri Lanka is South Asia’s first fully integrated resort and Melco’s first project in the region.
The John Keells Group vision
The development forms part of the John Keells Group’s long-term vision for creating a world-class destination capable of contributing to Sri Lanka’s international profile. John Keells Holdings, one of the country’s most prominent diversified business groups, developed the project through its property and leisure interests, while Melco operates the Nüwa hotel and the resort’s gaming and entertainment component.
At the centre of the accommodation offering is Cinnamon Life City of Dreams Sri Lanka, a 687-room hotel designed to serve leisure travellers, business visitors and large-scale events. The resort also includes Nüwa Sri Lanka, an ultra-luxury hotel with 113 rooms, bringing the total hotel inventory to approximately 800 rooms.

The project’s hospitality offering is supported by 17 signature restaurants and bars, a luxury retail promenade, residences, offices and a substantial range of event facilities. The inclusion of Sri Lankan boutiques and culinary concepts alongside international hospitality standards also creates an opportunity for local design, food and service traditions to be presented to visitors from across the region.
This combination of scale and variety is central to the John Keells Group’s ambition. The objective is not merely to establish another high-rise hotel, but to develop a destination with the capacity to support tourism, business activity, dining, entertainment and major cultural gatherings throughout the year.
Colombo as a MICE destination
One of the most consequential elements of City of Dreams Sri Lanka is its emphasis on MICE tourism , meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions. Cinnamon Life includes ballrooms, banquet halls and an exhibition centre designed to accommodate major gatherings, with facilities capable of hosting events for up to approximately 5,000 participants.
For Colombo, this creates the possibility of attracting conferences and corporate incentives that might previously have been directed towards larger regional destinations. International events generate demand across a wide network of industries, including airlines, transport providers, restaurants, event production companies, florists, technology suppliers, professional services and small businesses.
The broader economic significance therefore extends beyond hotel occupancy. A conference delegate may require accommodation, airport transfers, dining, entertainment, shopping and local excursions, while an international exhibition can introduce overseas companies to Sri Lankan suppliers and service providers. In this respect, an integrated venue can act as an instrumental platform for strengthening connections between tourism and the wider economy.

The MICE component also complements Colombo’s position as Sri Lanka’s commercial centre. With improved coordination between hotels, transport operators, tourism businesses and event organisers, the city has the potential to become more than a short-stop destination for visitors travelling through the country. City of Dreams provides a substantial foundation for that transition by placing accommodation, event infrastructure and entertainment within one professionally managed environment.
A year of culinary and hospitality experiences
The first anniversary has been celebrated through a programme extending throughout August rather than being limited to a single ceremony. The programme has highlighted the destination’s culinary diversity, with special menus, dining offers and international collaborations introduced across the resort.
Participating specialty restaurants offered a 30 per cent reduction on food and beverages from 1 to 9 August, while anniversary-inspired set menus were scheduled across venues including Staten Bar & Grill, Bistro des Marées, Yoroko and Sapphire Dragon from 10 to 16 August.
A notable feature of the anniversary programme was the two-day collaboration at Indiya involving Indian Accent Mumbai and Ekaa, with Executive Chef Rijul Gulati and Chef Niyati Rao contributing specially curated vegetarian and non-vegetarian tasting menus on 7 and 8 August. Such collaborations strengthen Colombo’s connection with the wider South Asian culinary scene and provide an avenue through which local diners and international visitors can encounter contemporary interpretations of regional cuisine.

Additional hospitality programming during the anniversary month has included international beverage experiences and a Swiss culinary promotion, reinforcing the resort’s intention to operate as a year-round destination rather than a venue dependent on occasional headline events.
A platform for Sri Lanka’s next tourism chapter
City of Dreams Sri Lanka’s first year has demonstrated the visual and commercial impact of a large integrated development, but its longer-term importance will be determined by how effectively it contributes to new visitor demand, higher-value tourism and wider participation by Sri Lankan businesses.
The project’s potential is considerable. It offers an international-scale venue for conferences, a substantial hotel inventory, a diverse dining portfolio and a contemporary entertainment environment, while its location places it close to Colombo’s established commercial districts, historic sites and transport connections.
For Sri Lankan expatriates and international visitors returning to the country, the development also provides a recognisable modern address through which Colombo’s changing identity can be experienced. It stands alongside the city’s historic buildings, markets, religious sites and coastal settings, adding a new layer to an urban landscape shaped by centuries of trade and cultural exchange.
The first anniversary is therefore more than a celebration of one completed year. It is a marker of a broader shift in how Colombo is presented: as a city capable of combining heritage with modern design, local hospitality with international service standards, and traditional tourism with large-scale business and entertainment opportunities.
As City of Dreams Sri Lanka enters its second year, its distinctive towers will remain the most visible evidence of the project’s arrival. Its more enduring contribution, however, may be measured through the visitors it attracts, the events it hosts, the employment and commercial opportunities it supports, and the confidence it creates in Colombo’s capacity to compete as a premier regional destination.
