Colombo’s Galle Face Green was transformed into a vast open-air canvas on Sunday, 9 August 2026, as the sixth Derana Signal Colombo International Kite Festival brought together 1,500 local competitors and 80 international participants from 30 countries for a vibrant celebration of creativity, recreation and international friendship.

Against the broad horizon of the Indian Ocean, hundreds of kites rose above the capital in a display that combined traditional enjoyment with carefully organised competition, while families, young people, visitors and international kite enthusiasts gathered along the waterfront to experience one of Sri Lanka’s most distinctive public festivals.

Presented by TV Derana with organisational support from the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and the Sri Lanka Police, the event demonstrated how a well-planned cultural programme can create an inclusive public space in which sport, artistic expression, tourism and community participation are brought together with considerable success.

A colourful international gathering at Galle Face

The 2026 festival began at approximately 1.00 p.m., with local competitors joining professional kite flyers and enthusiasts who had travelled from 30 countries across several regions of the world. The participation of 80 international guests added a distinctly global character to the occasion, while the strong local turnout ensured that the event remained firmly rooted in Colombo’s family and community culture.

For international participants, the festival provided an opportunity to meet other kite enthusiasts, exchange techniques and display designs influenced by their own national traditions. For local competitors, it offered an unusual platform on which creativity could be presented before an international audience, demonstrating that a simple recreational activity can become an effective cultural bridge when it is organised on an ambitious scale.

The setting was particularly well suited to kite flying. Galle Face Green’s open coastal landscape, consistent sea breeze and unobstructed views across the Indian Ocean provided the necessary conditions for large and intricately designed kites to rise above the city. The contrast between the modern Colombo skyline, the expansive green and the moving patterns in the sky created a memorable visual identity for the festival.

The occasion also reinforced the potential of Colombo’s public spaces to host well-managed cultural events capable of attracting residents and international visitors alike. With its combination of accessibility, coastal scenery and proximity to the city’s major hotels and commercial areas, Galle Face Green remains an instrumental location for events that seek to connect Sri Lankan culture with the wider world.

Eight categories celebrating creativity

The competition was conducted across eight categories, allowing participants to demonstrate different forms of design, colour selection, construction and presentation. The categories included the Creative Kite competition, creative kites featuring the Derana and Signal logos, the Magic Ice Cream Most Colourful Kite, the Kotmale Most Vibrantly Decorated Kite, the Suncrush Artistic Peacock Kite, the DSI Beat Best-Looking Kite for competitors under 15, and the Signal Night Kite competition.

This structure ensured that the event was not limited to a single definition of technical skill. Some participants were judged on originality and artistic detail, while others competed through colour, decoration, national symbolism or age-specific creativity. The inclusion of an under-15 category was especially significant because it encouraged children and younger competitors to participate actively rather than remaining solely as spectators.

The night kite segment, scheduled after the main afternoon programme, added another dimension to the festival. Illuminated kites were flown as the evening descended, introducing a luminous spectacle above the city and extending the event beyond the customary daylight hours. This element was presented as Sri Lanka’s first night kite festival, giving the programme an innovative quality while retaining the simple wonder associated with kites and open skies.

Prizes were awarded to successful competitors across the categories, recognising both established kite flyers and emerging young talent. The awards also helped to give structure and purpose to an activity that might otherwise be viewed only as casual recreation, elevating kite flying into a form of competitive design and performance.

From kites to a major musical celebration

The festival’s energy continued after the conclusion of the kite competitions, when the Derana Boomtown musical concert began at approximately 7.30 p.m. at Galle Face Green. The concert featured Avatar, one of the most popular music groups among Sri Lanka’s younger audiences, together with other well-known Sri Lankan artists who performed throughout the four-hour programme.

The transition from a family-oriented afternoon festival to a large-scale evening concert enabled the programme to reach different sections of the public without losing its central sense of celebration. Children and families were able to enjoy the kite displays during the day, while young adults and music enthusiasts were provided with a major entertainment event later in the evening.

Reports indicated that the concert attracted hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic fans and filled the venue to capacity. The scale of the audience reflected the strength of public interest in large outdoor events that combine entertainment with a recognisable national setting. It also showed how cultural festivals can generate extended activity for nearby food outlets, transport services, hospitality businesses and other small enterprises.

The combined programme gave Galle Face Green an animated but coherent identity throughout the day: colourful kites occupied the sky in the afternoon, illuminated designs brought a new visual character after sunset, and the concert stage then became the focus of a large musical gathering.

Community spirit at the heart of the event

Although the festival included international competitors, branded categories and a major concert, its most important achievement was the way in which it encouraged ordinary public participation. Kite flying is accessible, visually engaging and capable of involving people across generations, making it particularly effective as a community activity.

Parents and children could watch professional flyers while also observing the construction and design of competing kites. Young participants were given a direct opportunity to enter a national event, while overseas visitors and local enthusiasts were able to share a common interest without the barriers that can sometimes accompany more specialised sporting or cultural programmes.

The event therefore functioned as more than a commercial entertainment production. It provided a setting in which Sri Lankan families, international visitors and local creative communities could gather peacefully in one of Colombo’s most recognisable public spaces. Such occasions are valuable because they strengthen social connection through shared experience and present a positive image of Sri Lanka to visitors and international media.

International coverage, including an Associated Press video report, further widened the festival’s reach. Images of kites filling the Colombo sky offered a colourful representation of Sri Lanka that was immediately understandable to audiences beyond the country, while the participation of flyers from 30 countries reinforced the festival’s growing international profile.

Swift coordination after the crowds departed

The festival’s successful conclusion was also marked by the prompt response to the environmental challenge created by such a large public gathering. With thousands of people attending the kite programme and the Boomtown concert, a considerable amount of waste accumulated in the surrounding areas after the event.

According to the Ada Derana First at 9 broadcast, Derana coordinated swiftly with the relevant municipal authorities, enabling the waste to be removed and the area to be cleaned by the early morning. This response was an important part of the event’s overall public responsibility, particularly because Galle Face Green is a prominent coastal recreation area used by residents and visitors throughout the year.

Large-scale events are judged not only by attendance, entertainment value or media attention, but also by the manner in which organisers manage their impact on public spaces. The rapid cleanup demonstrated practical cooperation between the event organisers and municipal services, ensuring that the waterfront was returned to a clean and usable condition soon after the crowds had dispersed.

That coordination offers an instructive model for future cultural and entertainment programmes. Advance planning, clearly assigned responsibilities and prompt post-event action can help ensure that public celebrations remain compatible with environmental care and the everyday needs of the wider community.

A promising platform for Sri Lankan culture

The sixth Derana Signal Colombo International Kite Festival has established a compelling formula: local participation, international exchange, creative competition, family entertainment, youth engagement, music and responsible event management. Its success at Galle Face Green demonstrated that Sri Lankan festivals can be both locally meaningful and internationally attractive when their programmes are designed with imagination and operational discipline.

For Sri Lankans living in Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, New Zealand and elsewhere, the festival also provided a vivid reminder of the cultural activity taking place in Colombo. Its images of colour, music and shared enjoyment carried a positive message to Sri Lankans worldwide, while presenting the country as a destination capable of hosting distinctive and welcoming public events.

The sky above Galle Face Green may have been the festival’s most obvious stage, but the event’s wider significance lay in the connections formed beneath it. Local competitors met international flyers, families shared the waterfront with visitors, young people encountered new forms of artistic competition, music audiences gathered after sunset, and public authorities worked with organisers to restore the site by morning.

In that respect, the 2026 festival was not merely a display of kites. It was a carefully coordinated celebration of community confidence, international friendship and Sri Lanka’s continuing ability to turn a familiar public space into an occasion of national and global interest.
