Me with a rake upon my shoulder,
Not in theatre, not in scrubs, But in my garden, a little older.
Once a plastic surgeon in Australia, Mending with hands, serving the community,
Honoured with the Order of Australia, But humbled most by humanity.
Now retired in Kandy, my home, Ninety-eight years and still I sow, No scalpel now, just soil and seed, Watching what I plant gently grow.
From operating theatre to veggie plot, The tools have changed, the heart stays true,
To heal, to help, to grow, to give, That is the work I still pursue.
Pinky (niece), caught me as I am,
No pose, just earth and morning light, A rake, a plot, a peaceful soul,
Still gardening with delight
