MASTER OF ARTS IN PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES (2015)

Melissa’s first role after graduating will be a professional level position with the United Nations Secretariat in New York as an Associate Social Affairs Officer in the Social Policy and Development Division of the Department of Social and Economic Affairs, where she will be working in the Civil Society and Outreach Unit, strengthening international cooperation for social development. Her MPACS dissertation was entitled ‘Sexes of the Battle: Reconstructing gender, reconstructing a nation. Sri Lanka’s post-war rehabilitation programme’.
While studying the MPACS degree part-time, Melissa was a Project Officer at Cambodia’s Centre for Peace & Conflict Studies monitoring Myanmar’s peace process through field research in several states. She also worked as an academic Research Assistant at Charles Sturt University in the field of empirical legal studies focusing on evidence-based decisions to promote social, procedural and distributive justice in the community. While in this role she co-authored several journal articles on human rights and dispute resolution mechanisms of the NSW Police Force.
In addition to her MA, Melissa hold degrees in law and international studies (development studies major) from the University of New South Wales. Prior to completing her Master’s degree, Melissa worked at Organisation Haburas Moris in Timor-Leste, as the National Coordinator for Anti-Poverty Week in Australia, and an Associate at Global Policy Forum in New York.
