Kandy — The air was surprisingly calm when Ven. Pannankara Thero arrived on Sri Lankan soil, almost as if the island itself paused to take a breath. For weeks, people in tea boutiques and bus queues talked about one main thing — the world feeling tense,

uncertain, and on edge. News of conflicts abroad had quietly seeped into everyday life, making many Sri Lankans feel quietly anxious.

And then, there was the monk walking for peace.

Ven. Pannankara Thero, the saffron-robed pilgrim whose peace walk started in the United States and has since travelled across continents, arrived with just a gentle smile, a small group of fellow monks, and a powerful message that cut through the noise: “The richest people in the world are here in Sri Lanka.”

He wasn’t talking about money.

A Nation Pauses to Listen

From the moment he appeared, crowds gathered—not in frenzy, but with a gentle, respectful sense of relief. Elderly devotees pressed their palms together with warmth. Young people, who were usually glued to their phones, looked up with curiosity and admiration. Mothers brought their children forward with hopeful smiles for blessings. The soothing chant of sādhu flowed through the streets like a calming tide.

It wasn’t just a political rally or a protest. It was something truly unique: a collective moment of calm and relief that we all shared.

As the monks strolled peacefully, barefoot and unhurried, those around them followed quietly, feeling their hearts soften with warmth. Some shed joyful tears; others gazed in wonder. Many later said they felt as if a heavy weight had been gently lifted, even if only for a little while.

“Our Wealth Is Our Heart” When Ven. Pannankara Thero spoke; his words were simple yet deeply meaningful, echoing the hopes of a nation. He gently reminded all Sri Lankans that their true wealth lies in compassion, generosity, and resilience in facing hardships with kindness. In a world often shaken by conflict, he assured them that Sri Lanka’s rich spiritual legacy is an incomparable treasure. For many, this was a heartfelt reassurance they hadn’t realised they were seeking.

A Walk That Became a Mirror

The peace walk, which has touched hearts in many countries, is not about grand displays. There are no banners, no slogans, no demands—just monks walking slowly and steadily, with purpose. In their quiet presence, Sri Lankans saw a reflection of themselves: a resilient people who have weathered storms, rebuilt after tragedy, and still greet strangers with a warm smile. As one devotee softly said while watching the procession go by, “We forgot we were strong. He reminded us.”

A Moment That Will Be Remembered

A touching moment of togetherness happened in Kandy when the ongoing “Walk for Peace” arrived at a local mosque during its week-long journey across Sri Lanka, bringing people together in a spirit of harmony.

In a time when the world feels unpredictable, Ven. Pannankara Thero’s arrival became more than a visit. It became a moment — a pause in the national heartbeat, a reminder that peace is not only a global aspiration but a personal practice.

As the monks continue their journey across the island, thousands join, watch, or stand by the roadside to feel the quiet power of their presence.

For now, Sri Lanka walks a little lighter.

May the Triple Gem always watch over you, dear readers.
