A New Dawn of Unity — The Sri Lanka Association of NSW Leads the Way-by Harold Gunatillake

Sydney’s Sri Lankan community is known for its warmth, resilience and cultural pride. The Sri Lanka Association of NSW, led by President Saliya, is turning that spirit into action. Its 2027 campaign invites Sri Lankans of every ethnicity, creed and background to unite, marking a significant and progressive step towards a stronger community.
More than a flyer, it is a clear statement of purpose.
One Platform for All Sri Lankans — Without Barriers
Diaspora communities worldwide have faced divisions for decades. In Sydney, the Association offers a shared direction: one platform, one community, one future.
The invitation is clear: Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, Malay and all other Sri Lankans are welcome to stand together. This inclusive approach is both refreshing and vital to building a strong, respected diaspora in Australia.
By welcoming young Australian Sri Lankans’ ideas, energy and cultural pride, the Association encourages the next generation to take an active role in preserving our heritage.
Strengthening Bonds Between Two Nations
The flyer’s imagery — Sri Lanka and Australia connected by a glowing arc — captures a powerful truth: Diaspora unity strengthens bilateral goodwill.
When Sri Lankans in Australia collaborate, volunteer, innovate, and celebrate together, it reflects positively on both nations.
Cultural diplomacy, community service, and youth engagement become bridges of understanding. These activities foster:
- Mutual respect
- Economic and cultural exchange
- A stronger voice for Sri Lankans in Australia
- A deeper appreciation of Sri Lanka’s heritage
This is how communities abroad contribute to national pride at home.
A Committee Turning Vision into Action
President Saliya and his committee merit recognition for moving beyond routine events to strategic initiatives focused on the future. For the first time, the Association is defining its role as:
- A centre for developing young leaders
- A forum for multicultural unity
- A custodian of Sri Lankan heritage
- A link between Australia and Sri Lanka
- A modern organisation prepared for 2027 and beyond This clear sense of purpose is uncommon and worthy of
Respecting the Past, Energising the Future
The slogan “Honour Our Past. Power Our Future.” expresses a guiding philosophy, not just a tagline.
It honours the sacrifices of earlier migrants who laid the community’s foundations and empowers young people to build on that legacy with creativity, professionalism and unity.
Through this approach, the diaspora grows, the community gains strength, and Sri Lankans in Sydney set an example worldwide.
An Invitation to Sri Lankans Worldwide
To Sri Lankans in Australia and worldwide: Be proud of the Sri Lanka Association of NSW’s efforts. Its work shows that unity is achievable, heritage can evolve with the times, and leadership can welcome everyone.
Such initiatives reinforce our identity, enhance our reputation and inspire the next generation.
A Closing Note of Thanks
Thank you, President Saliya, and our deepest thanks to every committee member, volunteer and supporter. We are truly grateful for the time, care and dedication you give to our Sri Lankan community. Thank you for bringing us closer together and nurturing a sense of belonging we can all cherish. Your commitment means more than words can fully express.
Your vision is creating a brighter future for Sri Lankans in Sydney — united, confident and proud.
