A clever Sri Lankan expat living in Canada shares his thoughts, offering valuable insights with warmth and friendliness. He seems eager to connect and share his experiences, making the message feel inviting and personable.

A Sri Lankan expat living in Canada, feeling upset, shared his thoughts after I posted a YouTube video I made with joy for my grandniece’s wedding—her beautiful destination wedding, a new trend gaining popularity in Sri Lanka.

Expat writes:

“Extravagant weddings in Sri Lanka at a time when the country is heading to the “pallama ”. Currently, and since 2022, the number of old people and retired people exceeds the number of working people, and the youth population is rapidly dwindling. You need

2.1 children per female to keep the population at a steady value. In Sri Lanka it has, I think, fallen below 1.8, and then there are many young people leaving. So, soon, there will be no one to pay taxes, or care for the old, or run all these restaurants and tourist resorts.”

Sri Lanka’s Private Joys and Public Narratives: Why Celebrations Still Matter

A wedding is truly a heartfelt celebration of hope. It’s a special moment when two young souls come together to envision a shared future, embraced by love, family, and cherished traditions. In Sri Lanka, where culture beautifully shapes everyday life, a wedding isn’t just a private affair — it’s a vibrant expression of heritage, a testament to resilience, and a joyful reminder that happiness always finds its way, even through tough times.

Recently, an expatriate Sri Lankan in Canada responded to a video presentation of a family wedding by linking the celebration to the country’s socioeconomic concerns. His message reflected a growing global tendency: to view every personal moment through the lens of national statistics, demographic anxieties, and

economic forecasts. But this perspective misses something essential.

A private celebration does not diminish the realities of the nation

— nor does it need to carry the burden of them.

The Misplaced Link Between Personal Joy and National Strain

Sri Lanka is experiencing some important changes, just like many other countries. Fertility rates are going down, more young people are migrating, and we’re seeing more elderly citizens. These are real challenges that thoughtful policymakers need to plan for with long-term strategies.

However, linking these structural challenges directly to a family wedding might overlook the true nature of the problem and the joyful spirit of the celebration.

A wedding isn’t just a beautiful celebration—it’s also a boost for our local communities! It helps support talented florists, photographers, caterers, musicians, decorators, hotels, transport providers, and many other small businesses that thrive because of these special events.

In a country where tourism and hospitality play such a vital role, these celebrations are more than just fun occasions; they’re essential parts of our economy, strengthening it step by step.

The Role of the Expatriate Community

Sri Lankans living abroad are often among the most heartfelt voices on the country’s future. Their concerns are born out of love

— though sometimes from being far away.

In Sri Lanka, families typically appreciate a blessing, a kind gesture, and a warm acknowledgement that life should continue with dignity and happiness, especially during joyful times, rather than a lecture on macroeconomics.

A wedding is a wonderful occasion to come together in joy and support. It’s a special moment to encourage the young couple,

cherish the family, and celebrate the beauty of continuing traditions.

Sri Lanka’s Present Trajectory: A More Balanced View

The expatriate’s story about a country “heading to the pallama” might sound a bit exaggerated, but it’s important to remember that many positive developments are actually happening today.

  • Tourism is bouncing back beautifully! Even during the usual quieter months from February to June, more visitors are coming than in previous This really shows how people around the world are feeling more confident about Sri Lanka’s stability and warm hospitality.
  • Foreign reserves are looking stronger, thanks to better fiscal management and more inflows coming It’s a positive sign of progress that reflects ongoing improvements.
  • Living standards are steadily getting better, opening up more access to goods, services, and job opportunities for
  • With political stability now restored, we can look forward to resuming long-term planning and investment, creating a more secure and optimistic

Yes, while the oil crisis has caused some temporary challenges, Sri Lanka has faced much tougher times before and come out stronger. Today, the country’s economy is not on the brink of collapse but is slowly bouncing back with a sense of cautious optimism and hope for better days ahead.

Why Celebrations Still Matter

During uncertain times, celebrations tend to feel even more special. They serve as heartfelt reminders that:

  • Families remain
  • Traditions
  • Young people still choose to build their futures
  • Hope is not a luxury — it is a

A wedding isn’t just an escape from everyday life; it’s a heartfelt declaration that life keeps going strong, even through the ups and downs.

A Blessing for the Young Couple — and for Sri Lanka

My grand-niece’s wedding is truly a beautiful celebration, symbolising more than just an event — it’s about continuance, rich culture, and hope for the future.

It beautifully depicts a Sri Lanka that truly values beauty, community, and tradition, shining with pride through any shadows of negativity. These gatherings serve as warm reminders of the enduring spirit and joyful resilience that make us who we are.

What the young couple truly deserves is heartfelt blessings. The family appreciates recognition for their love and efforts. And the country thrives on a fair and balanced understanding of its journey — celebrating resilience and renewal, rather than focusing on negativity.

Sri Lanka is not heading toward darkness. Instead, it is gently moving forward, day by day, toward a future filled with stability, blossoming tourism, vibrant cultural pride, and the resilient spirit of its amazing people.

Sometimes, a wedding — filled with light, music, and hope — can be the most beautiful proof of that bright future.
