The 798th Annual Esala Perahera Festival of the historic Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya will be held until August 1 in Ratnapura.

The Kumbal Perahera festival began on July 18 and will go on till July 22, while the Weedi (Street) Perahera will be held from July 22 to July 27. The Maha Perahera will be held from July 28 to August 1.

Basnayaka Nilame Migara Jayasundara said that the all-night Pirith chanting ceremony according to the age-old tradition was held at the Neboda Temple premises recently to invoke blessings on the 798th annual Esala Perahera Festival of the historic Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Dewalaya.

It was followed by an almsgiving ceremony to the Maha Sangha. This year’s Esala Perahera Festival will conclude with the traditional water cutting ceremony at the Kalu Ganga in the Rathamballa area, after the afternoon procession. According to the Basnayaka Nilame, from 2019, the Esala Perahera Festival of the historic Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Dewalaya is held under the patronage of the state.
