The Speaker of the Senate of Canada, the Honourable Raymonde Gagné, C.M., O.M., formally recognised Visita Sirin Leelaratna and a Canada-based Buddhist cultural delegation at the Senate Chamber on 8 October 2026, during Women’s History Month in Canada. The occasion brought Sri Lankan Buddhist heritage, women’s spiritual leadership and the work of Buddhist cultural organisations into a prominent Canadian institutional setting.

The delegation had been invited by Senator Yuen Pau Woo and included representatives of the Buddhist Heritage Month Initiative. The visit centred on a history that links Sri Lanka with the international Buddhist community: the journey of Bhikkhunī Devasārā Therī, also known as Tissarā, from Sri Lanka to Nanjing, China, in the fifth century.

The gathering is best understood as formal recognition of the delegation during a Senate Chamber visit. Hiru News’ report does not describe a Senate resolution or a federal declaration of Buddhist Heritage Month. That distinction preserves the significance of the occasion while accurately reflecting what was reported.

A ceremonial welcome and a Sri Lankan gift

During the visit, Leelaratna presented Senator Woo with a Certificate of Appreciation, acknowledging his support for the Buddhist Heritage Month initiative and the Global Bhikkhunī Heritage Programme. Leelaratna also presented a handcrafted Sri Lankan elephant, chosen to symbolise wisdom, peace and friendship.

The exchange gave the meeting a distinctly Sri Lankan cultural dimension. The elephant, an enduring symbol in Sri Lankan art and heritage, served as a gesture of goodwill between the delegation and its Canadian hosts. The certificate, in turn, recognised the senator’s support for initiatives seeking to raise awareness of Buddhist heritage and the history of the Bhikkhunī Saṅgha.

The discussions addressed the proposed expansion of Buddhist Heritage Month, strengthening the global Bhikkhunī Saṅgha and the relevance of Buddhist ethics to leadership, education and emerging technologies. These subjects connect historical religious traditions with questions facing contemporary communities: how ethical principles are taught, how leadership is understood and how cultural knowledge can remain meaningful as societies change.

The reported discussion was not limited to preserving the past. It also considered how Buddhist values and women’s monastic leadership might contribute to education and public understanding in the present. The conversation positioned heritage as a living inheritance. One sustained through study, practice and dialogue across countries and generations.

A journey from Sri Lanka to Nanjing

At the heart of the visit was the account of Bhikkhunī Devasārā Therī, also known as Tissarā. In 433 CE, she travelled by sea from Sri Lanka to Nanjing, China, where she helped establish a Bhikkhunī lineage that has continued for nearly 1,600 years.

The voyage is regarded as one of the earliest documented long-distance maritime missions led by a woman in the Buddhist world. Its historical importance lies not only in the distance travelled, but also in the role played by a Sri Lankan woman in the transmission of Buddhist ordination and monastic learning beyond the island.

Through this lineage, Sri Lanka’s Buddhist history is connected to the religious lives of communities in China and to the continuing presence of Bhikkhunīs around the world. The history also places women’s spiritual leadership firmly within the story of Buddhist institutions: women were not merely witnesses to the movement of ideas across Asia, but instrumental participants in sustaining and transmitting religious practice.

The nearly 1,600-year lineage was presented as a central historical reference for the Senate Chamber discussions. Its continued significance helps explain why present-day initiatives place Bhikkhunī heritage alongside cultural education and community engagement. The legacy is not simply a record of a journey completed in the fifth century; it is a tradition that continues to shape religious practice and public understanding.

Living heritage and Sri Lanka–Canada connections

Hiru News reported that this heritage continues to inform the work of Buddhist Heritage Month Inc. and the Buddhist Embassy through the Wisdom in Motion initiative. Such initiatives offer a means of presenting Buddhist history to wider audiences while recognising the role of Buddhist communities in Canada and the contributions of people who sustain cultural and religious traditions abroad.

The visit also reflected the contribution of Sri Lankan communities overseas in maintaining links with the island’s history and heritage. Through cultural programmes, educational work and engagement with institutions, community representatives can help make Sri Lanka’s historical connections visible within the societies where they live. In this instance, the story of a fifth-century Sri Lankan Bhikkhunī provided a meaningful point of connection between Sri Lanka, Canada and China.

That connection is relevant to Sri Lankan Buddhist readers in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and elsewhere. It offers a reminder that Sri Lankan heritage is part of a wider history of cultural exchange, and that the work of communities abroad can help preserve and share that history with new generations.

eLanka has previously covered related developments, including Bhikkhunī Ayya Aloka Therī’s expected visit to Canada and the Wisdom in Motion programme. This article focuses specifically on the Senate recognition on 8 October and the historical lineage highlighted during that visit.

In its report of 12 October, Hiru News also previewed a further programme, “Tradition in Motion: Living Heritage”, scheduled for 17 October at Parliament Hill, with Bhikkhunī Ayya Aloka Therī expected to attend. The later eLanka coverage of Wisdom in Motion provides a separate account of that programme.

The Senate Chamber recognition brought together cultural diplomacy, Buddhist history and women’s spiritual leadership in a setting of national significance. Its central historical reference, the journey of Bhikkhunī Devasārā Therī from Sri Lanka to Nanjing in 433 CE, underscores how Sri Lankan Buddhist heritage has travelled across generations and borders, while continuing to inform the work of communities today.
