DESMOND KELLY

“MORE PONDERISMS” – by Des Kelly With my apologies to those who have pondered these ponderisms before, I did ponder on whether to publish these particular “beauties” on e’Lanka again and decided to do so simply because the ponderous pharaphaneliya (yes, I ponder and/or wonder if I have spelt that right), that Keith Bennett sends us from time to time is primarily important for the poshest website (in simple English), in Australia. Also gives me the chance, immediately after Valentine’s day, this year, to dedicate a wonderful song, to whom it may concern, tying in with the above ponderisms. This is how I like them and here’s hoping our wonderful readers will enjoy both the poetic song and the subject as stated above.   Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. Pondering Ponderisms  Why do peanuts float in a regular coke and sink in a diet coke. Go ahead and try it.  I ...

Ernest C Kelaart: The Smiling Executioner An ideal story to be heralded by my version of Defying Gravity that I recorded with Waylon Jennings, many moons ago. Also, I am very proud to say that THIS smiling Executioner Ernie Kelaart served in the Royal Ceylon Navy with me, and everything they say about him is so true. There was nothing it seems, in sports, that Ernie wasn’t a Champion at. He was also a Champion guy,, loved and respected by everyone who knew him. ...

“WILDLIFE FACTS” – by Des Kelly All Sri Lankans are fully aware about the top three wildlife areas/parks that have existed there, for eons, Ex-patriots and other tourists also never fail to visit at least one of them, on frequent or infrequent visits to the Island, but I am certain that very few of us realized that there are at least eighteen (18) more, dotted around our Mother-Country. This was “news” to me as well, and this is why we, at e’Lanka always say a big “thank you” to our valued members such as Keith Bennett for information such as this, information that teaches us that learning accompanies each and everyone from womb to tomb, as the saying goes. Now, let us get down to the facts about the 21 National wildlife parks in Sri Lanka. Enjoy this, folks, and then you can say like me “well, I have learned ...

“TREES” ….. I thought that I would never see, a poem lovely as a tree. Something I read about, many years ago. Anyway, once again Keith Bennett has sent us this interesting amalgam of beautiful trees that have been transformed, as if by magic, into various other figures. Thank you, Keith. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. ...

“FACTS OF LIFE” – by Des Kelly  Life is what we make of it. How true is this saying ?. Everything in life is only temporary. NOTHING lasts forever, depressing, as it seems. The crux of the matter is to get the most out of life, and ENJOY every minute of it, while you can. Keith Bennett, my friend seems to think so, and I thank him for various stories he sends me, from time to time. RUKMANI DEVI – by Des Kelly She was undoutedly one of the most beautiful, PLUS beautifully talented women, that Sri Lanka ever produced. She was an actress of repute, a singer, better known as the first Nightingale of Ceylon, and, as a dancer, well, I had the ultimate pleasure of waltzing around the dance floor with her, many moons ago, at a private “house-warming” party in Wattala, and believe me folks, she was a superb dancer, as well, giving me a few minutes of my life that I’ll never forget. ...

VALE’ BILL FORBES – by Des Kelly … ….. …..  Just received the sad news of the passing of yet another Sri Lankan Entertainment Legend, my friend Bill Forbes in England. Like so many others in the “Showbiz” fraternity in Ceylon of our era, Bill also started working part-time for Donavan Andree, the greatest “Showman” that our Lovely Island Home ever produced. Donavan wasted no time after hearing the magnificent vocal talents of Bill, and started to book him into shows where packed audiences soon came to love the “Forbes- magic”, and then began to organize the massive Bill Forbes Fan Club. Also, like a few others, who worked for him, Donavan had Bill perform a special song for him, whenever & wherever he appeared to hear his favourites sing. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the titles of all Donavan’s preferred songs, but I do remember attending some of Bill’s shows, ...

SOMETHIN’ STUPID (Nancy & Frank Sinatra) – by Des Kelly Never have we received anything, pertaining to this particular “title” from Keith Bennett, before this, and, as such, I have decided that this most intriguing story of old Frankie and his Nancy with the laughing face, as he liked to describe his daughter, was fully worth the publicity that e’Lanka offers for perusal by it’s Members & readers. I take this chance to thank Keith Bennett very much, for all these interesting tidbits he sends out to us from time to time, this time, we will evenaccept even “Somethin Stupid”. ...

“GUESS WHO” – by Des Kelly Another Kelly-Klassic. Reminded me so much of someone who once stood on stages, both in Lanka and Australia and sang his heart out, for anyone who would listen. Yes folks, it was ‘your’s truly’. I was well-known as a singer/guitarist in Ceylon (then), for nigh on twenty years, hardly ever seen without an old acoustic guitar, slung around my shoulders, singing songs whenever and wherever I was needed, never worrying about the money I could have earned, simply because money (in Showbiz), never did mean very much to me. My “payment” was in the applause I received from audiences both large and small. However, music gained me many ‘lurks’, not afforded others. Lurks such as Shore-leave granted me, whenever the Officers of the Royal Ceylon Navy in which I served, were instructed by the Captain of the Navy, Rear Admiral Royce de Mel, to ...
