DESMOND KELLY

“DEFYING GRAVITY” – by Des Kelly This particular song, a rather strange one, also titled “The Executioner’s Song”, written by John Cacavas, based on a true story written by a very famous Author named Norman Mailer, about a convicted murderer named Gary Gilmore, sentenced to death for his crimes, only to have the sentence reduced to imprisonment, by his defence lawyers, and then DECIDE that he wished to be executed, rather than spend long years behind bars. Gary Gilmore then educated himself in law, using books issued to him by the prison library, to have his reduced sentence revoked, and his own death sentence carried out. A very strange tale indeed, beautifully penned by Mailer. Gilmore had his sentence of death finally carried out, and this is where the SONG “Defying Gravity” makes it’s entry. An epic documentary was then filmed, and Country Music Star Waylon Jennings was picked to ...

“A KELLY KLASSIC” – by Heidi Hague- “Some broken hearts never mend” – By Des Kelly   Another great song from this Skandinavian Country Queen that I now love. Had never seen her before, but now I cannot seem to get over her singing, her accent, and the songs she sings, plus the fact that she is beautiful as well. HEIDI HAGUE will make an appearance on e’Lanka on my KELLY KLASSICS more often, as I feel that our Members will be only too happy to see her. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. ...

Life is a short Journey-by Des Kelly A  woman climbed up the bus and sat down beside a man, hitting him with her numerous bags. When the man remained silent,  the woman asked him why he did not complain when she hit him with her bags ? The man replied with a Smile: “There is no need to be upset about something so insignificant, as our journey together is so short, because I’m getting off at the next stop ” This answer disturbed the woman so much, she asked the man to excuse her  and thought the words needs to be written in gold Each of us must understand that our time in this world is so short, that darkening it with useless arguments, jealousy, not forgiving others, discontentment and bad attitudes are a ridiculous waste of time and energy. Did someone break your heart?  Stay calm. The trip is ...

“THE LAND DOWN UNDER” – by Des Kelly It does happen to be the Country that most Sri Lankans migrated to, when things began to get tough in our Motherland. Australia thus became our Stepmother Country, this vast brown Continent, our move from a tiny Island that many did NOT want to leave, but had to, because of circumstances that began in Ceylon of the early 1950’s, circumstances that seemed to get more difficult with each passing year.Of course, I cannot speak for any other migrants, but I migrated to Melbourne with a very young family, only to make certain that my children would not be discriminated against, because of our Burgher ancestry. We decided on Australia because I already had some Uncles, Aunts, & Cousins who were resident here, and couldn’t praise this Country enough, even though those who did come here initially found that life was not easy ...

Reflection “THAT’S LIFE”‘ – by Des Kelly That’s what all the people say, think I saw this last April, up it comes again in May, yet this “post” is so good, I would think it quite rude, not to reiterate this advice so good, once it’s all understood, so thank you again, both Keith & Charmaine. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. Most of us are now in the last quarter of our life and should read this interesting piece of advice  This is one of the nicest and most gentle articles I’ve read   in a while: no politics, no religion and no racial issues – just food for thought.   You know …… time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young and embarking on my new life. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and ...

“SUCH IS LIFE” – by Des Kelly   One of Australia’s most famous (or notorious), if you prefer him as such, was Ned Kelly, Outlaw & Bushranger, as they preferred to call them, in Oz. Ned, like your’s truly, came from an Irish background, Dublin, in fact, and got himself the reputation of being an Australian Robin Hood. He stole from the rich to give to the poor. The rich were not too happy about this, and decided to give Ned a hard time. This is not the complete story, obviously, but still an apt intro. Into this amazing video, sent to us by Keith Bennett via Suntha, someone who thankfully shortened his Surname, so that everyone could pronounce it correctly. Anyway, when they finally caught up with old Ned, they escorted him to the old Melbourne gaol, or jail, if you prefer it as such, and hanged him by ...

“WORD-PLAY” – by Des Kelly Sent in by Keith Bennett (thanks Keith), is a little something for Wordsmiths around the World, including many Sri Lankans, I’m sure. They are good, makes you stop and think, causing a chuckle or two, into the bargain Let us do away with too many words and get into this WORD-PLAY right now. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka.   If you love word play….These will make you smile… 1. Dad, are we pyromaniacs? Yes, we arson. 2. What do you call a pig with laryngitis? Disgruntled. 3. Writing my name in cursive is my signature move. 4. Why do bees stay in their hives during winter? Swarm. 5. If you’re bad at haggling, you’ll end up paying the price. 6. Just so everyone is clear, I’m going to put my glasses on. 7. A commander walks into a bar and orders everyone around. 8. I lost ...
