DESMOND KELLY

“MY WAY”  ANKA-SINATRA STORY IN SONG – Des Kelly There could never be anyone but “The Voice” as he was called, to sing such a superb song. “My Way” might well be the epitome of life itself, as the lyrics suggest, and e’Lanka is very grateful for the story of it’s making to come to us via our good contributors in both Chris. Lawton and Keith Bennett, both of whom we thank.. Paul Anka, now in his eighties, is still thankfully with us, while Frank Sinatra has hit the “higher-stage” just a few years ago. As I’ve been both a musician/songwriter & Entertainer since around 1942 myself,  I could think of none better than Frank Sinatra as the very BEST male Vocalist in the “Pop-music” culture ever, and although he was quite a good Vocalist himself, I am certain that Paul Anka, the Songwriter, would agree that NO-ONE, including himself ...

“STORIES IN SONG” – KELLY KLASSICS – by Des Kelly Following “Save the last dance for me”, here is another KELLY-KLASSIC, performed by an Icon whose EVERY WORD is clearly heard (as it should be), the late, great, RAY PRICE telling us the story behind a beautiful song, BOTH SIDES OF GOODBYE, pointing his finger at MOST Men, myself included. Rest in peace Ray, you are indeed PRICELESS to lovers of GREAT unforgettable Country Songs that will live forever, because, as I’ve said, a million times, Ray’s style of Country Music WILL NEVER DIE, folks   Desmond Kelly. “STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS” – by Des Kelly   There are many such stories, but at least this is a “happy one”. Once again, e’Lanka thanks Keith Bennett for sending in this great song/story combined. She needs no introduction whatsoever, but Anne Murray, one of my favourite female Country Singers does a magnificent job of singing the song (behind the true story), but please don’t forget the crippled guy who also does his version, right after the last dance is over, and to make a long story short,  following the lady, cos “ladies come first, even to the gallows”, as the famous  saying goes, & his introduction. ??   Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) eLanka.   The Drifters made it a hit in the 60s. Canadian Anne Murray sings it beautifully on stage…”Save the Last Dance”. The songwriter, Doc Pomus, was crippled, but his wife or girlfriend loved to go out and ...

SRI LANKA-SHOWBIZ – by Des Kelly   Talking about “Showbiz” in Sri Lanka today, I would like to present a group of Musicians who, in my opinion, are second to none. Their leader whose name is Sunil Subasinghe, I am told, is a multi-instrumentalist who would be welcomed anywhere in the World. Plenty of the stage- charisma that is needed to lead such a big band, which he does in style. This particular “Tone-Poem” also features Annesley Malawena, who is not only a great guy who has been very successful in “treading the boards” for many long years, but also one of the “greats” of Sinhala- Singing. Together with Chandeepa Jayakody, one of their up & coming vocal talents, they play yet another superb Sinhalese song that I enjoyed very much indeed. I am very happy to see guys like Sunil Subasinghe now lead bands that “present music” in such ...

“RETRIBUTION” – by Des Kelly Simply another word for the subject at hand, for the moment. Sent to me by Chris.Lawton O.A.M., for which I thank him, on behalf of e’Lanka, “KARMA” is the word, preferred by most, being much easier to spell, as well. We should all know what it means of course. Most of us have seen it happen in many different ways, to many different people, in both positive and negative contexts, but when illustrated in the prose this video pinpoints, it makes Karma more interesting, both for the reader and thinker. Now, please watch the video, and think about it, folks. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. ...

A ROYAL REBUKE Another difficult year for British Royalty and especially for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the second, seems to be well on it’s way, now that her second son Andrew who has been stripped of all his “Royal” titles, etcetera, by the Queen herself, because of a charge of rape committed slightly longer than a decade before, in which this former Prince , and by all accounts, the Monarch’s favourite son, is accused of raping a 21 year old woman, causing loads of unnecessary publicity for the Royal house of Windsor. I thank my friend Christopher Lawton for this most interesting article on the details of the case now pending, and can only add that my sympathies go out to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, who, at 95 years of age could have well done without yet another Annus Horribulous to add to all her duties, still being meticulously carried ...

“THE BLUE, WHITE, & GOLD” – by Des Kelly Even as I write this, we are but a few hours away from marking the most important anniversary of a 100 year celebration of the BEST COLLEGE OF OLD (in Sri Lanka) proudly  flying THE BLUE, WHITE, & GOLD Flag that every Peterite can claim to be their own, as far as an Alma-Mater is concerned By Des Kelly Editor-In-Chief eLanka ...

NOT WHO, BUT WHY ? – by Des Kelly Thank you, Keith Bennett for these perplexing ponderings. We should know the answers to the questions, but if the Author of this “post” is 85 years old, he/she has nothing to worry about, because I am now 86 and still do not know any of the answers either. Let’s just say that whoever is responsible for the ponderings now ponders no more, and leave it at that. Makes for interesting reading however, so here’s hoping that one of the brilliant book-worms of e’Lanka might be able to give us an answer or two, in order to enlighten us. I also take this chance to ask our e’Lanka readers to please COMMENT on what they find interesting on the BEST website for all Lankans & OTHEES around this World of ours. I promise, every  comment will be scrutinized and  adequate action taken in ...

“CHANGING TRAINS” – by Des Kelly  Fascinated by the accentuation of the lady describing this “Railway Story”, I decided to let all our valued e’Lanka members and readers watch this particular post, while, at the same time, enjoying Sri Lanka’s Changing Trains. Cannot help but remember the old Steam Red Rattlers of my era back home, but still fully enjoyed train trips from Colombo to Diyatalawa on a regular basis. Those were the days, I always say.   Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. ...
