DESMOND KELLY

“POINTS TO PONDER” – By Des Kelly I believe that some “Ponderisms”, as the quaint name suggests, have already been aired on e’Lanka, many moons ago, to the enjoyment of our valued members & readers, and lo & behold !!, here are a few more, to begin a brand new year, with. Points to ponder are something that everyone should do from time to time, simply to keep one’s brain “ticking over”, as it should. Reading them, in quality websites such as e’Lanka (of course), only adds to the common knowledge that everyone should possess. After you read this lot, I am willing to bet that you will think about those you favour, from time to time, and may I conclude this introduction, thanking Keith Bennett for sending them to us. These are indeed some “Points to Ponder”. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) eLanka. ...

“GOLDEN GLORIES” – by Des Kelly A fast arriving Centennial of my Alma Mater has also produced this superb Choral rendition of a song for St.Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya, and it is with pride that I present it on e’Lanka, right now. The orchestration of Golden Glories also bring back precious memories of the College I attended, and this is why I have decided to publish it under my banner of “KELLY-KLASSICS” in E’LANKA. Here it is, Ladies & Gentlemen GOLDEN GLORIES, just for you. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)  e’Lanka. COUNTDOWN TO THE PETERITE CENTENARY   To help all our Peterites to celebrate with great joy the centenary we have all been looking forward to, today we publish the Peterite Centenary Jubilee Song “Golden Glories of Our Days” by the Peterite Chorale. “Joe Dassin – Ça va pas changer le monde (Piano)” – a “KELLY KLASSIC” by Des Kelly   A “KELLY KLASSIC”…. French Composer, however, “this won’t change a thing”, as the French title of the song says, Whether you are Sri Lankan, Spanish, Skandinavian or even Scottish, the song itself is a beautiful piece of very simple, yet melodic music, composed (with lyrics in French as well), now performed by this Pianist named Waldtuefel, whose Nationality, I am completely unaware of. I think he works from home, has many videos to his credit, and I have the highest regard for his performance, which is why I decided that e’Lankans all over the Globe should also be given the chance of seeing Waldteufel, AS WELL !!. Desmond Kelly (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. ...

VALE’, DESMOND De SILVA – by Des Kelly That’s life, as they say. The “Baila-King”, as he was famously known,  has passed away in Melbourne, aged 77. To say that I was shocked to hear the news early this morning, would have to be the understatement of the year. This same baila-king was supposed to be coming along to pay me a visit before heading back home to Sydney, and I was looking forward to it, then, this happens !!. I was both shocked and saddened by the news. I was not privileged to know Desmond in Ceylon because, when he began his professional showbiz career in our lovely Island home, I was already in Australia. I believe that one of the original “groups” he started off with, was called The Fireflies, followed by several other bands, before moving abroad. I did get to know Desmond much better, after he ...

Heidi Hauge- “Skandinavian Queen Of Country Music” – by Des Kelly I had not heard too much about her, and did not have a clue about what I was missing, when suddenly, on You-tube, she turned up. At first glance, 31 songs (the best of), got me thinking. This is nearly 2 hours of song, one after another, by the same person. Cannot possibly spare the time to watch the entire album, but let’s see what she sounds like, shall we ?. Seven Spanish Angels, was the first song she sang. I really don’t know whether it was her “accent”, or what it was. I was immediately hooked on to this Skandinavian Queen, who sang the lyrics in her own inimitable fashion, with the best arrangement of this song, that I have heard, and plenty of STARS have sung this song. I loved the rendition by Heidi, so I decided ...

COLOMBO-CHETTY BUGGERS – by Des Kelly Quite apart from the Burghers, who still bear the same fond “alias”, the introduction by Maxwell Gerreyn, of the C.C.B. need absolutely no enhancement at all, so, as far as I am concerned, lets get on with it, and give our e’Lanka’s special members/readers, far & wide, a most interesting account of this very minute, yet important minority of Ceylon, then, Sri Lanka, now. Let me just take the chance, as a Burgher Bugger, to wish all the Colombo-Chetty Buggers, only the very best for the New Year of 2022. We do love them, especially when I remember that it was those buggers we always went to, during the “good old days”, when we needed a loan. My friends, please read on, and “thank you” again, Maxie.           Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. BRIGHT STARS OF COLOMBO CHETTY COMMUNITY by ECB ...

An Amazing Tale – By Des Kelly   Once again, a huge “thank you” to Max Gerreyn for this most amazing TRUE STORY. A strange feeling tells me that  our esteemed readers of e’Lanka could well do without any lengthy introduction to this Amazonian Tale, so allow me to take you straight into it. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) eLanka.  Amazing Story…… In 1964 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when this woman got pregnant her senior year in high school, the principal told her she would not be allowed to graduate. She begged the school to change its mind. It did, but there were conditions. She was not allowed to talk to the other students. She was barred from eating in the cafeteria. She could not come to school more than five minutes in advance of the opening bell, and she had to leave school within five minutes of the closing bell. She was not ...

LOVE HURTS – by Des Kelly One of my favourite female singers of the 1960’s was the very beautiful Connie Francis. I believe she came from a very strict Italian background and “scored” an ultra- protective father who felt that it was his duty to ensure that his daughter “scored” only the very best partner in life. Cannot say that I blame him, because Connie was not only very beautiful, but talented as well. She was still very young when her vocal talents were noticed and she also began to write her own songs. ...

CEYLON CHRISTMAS CHEER – by Des Kelly   …. A time that will forever be etched in my memory. Christmas comes but once a year, but when it does, it brings good cheer, a little rhyming verse I remember so well. I also remember well, the first little Lorensz Road Carol Party that I organized in 1950, the year we first moved in, there. I was just fourteen plus years old, at the time, met Neliya (Maureen) Hingert, a few months younger, fell head over heels in love with her, and had to prove to her that I was a force to be reckoned with, by firstly fighting her older brother Reginald, for permission to see her, and then organising this Carol Party, to “show-off” my guitar playing, which was quite mediocre at the time, but still the best in Lorensz Rd.,I suppose. My Carol party included my youngest brother ...

TASMANIAN TRAGEDY  by Des Kelly To wake up on a morning so very close to Christmas, to such heartrending news concerning five young children who have just perished under such tragic circumstances in Devonport,Tasmania, is bad enough, but it certainly makes it even worse, when we stop to think that these beautiful innocent kids were in the very midst of enjoying themselves, when this unforseen tragedy struck. These “Jumping-Castles” and other excitement-venues for children have been around for ages, thousands of kids have enjoyed time spent in them, and then THIS happens.!!. We are not certain about how many children were present in this ill-fated castle at the time, but we do know that four others are still being treated in hospital, at this moment. We do not know whether “the castle” was too insecure in it’s ground-structure, but we must realize that nature can be very dangerous and distructive at ...
