DESMOND KELLY

“WILLIE OR WON’T SHE” – by Des Kelly Another “KELLY KLASSIC” featuring another living legend of Country Music, whose name is in my title. He wrote the lyrics of this wonderful song which attracted me from it’s onset, that had Willie Nelson play his intro. on guitar, exactly as I once played my own instrument for so many memorable years, COUNTRY-STYLE. The song, called “You woudn’t cross the Street to say goodbye”, is strangely, akin to many such songs also written by this writer, songs which bring listeners like you, out there, memories of what took place sometimes, in your own lives. Enough said folks, please enjoy WILLIE NELSON in his own inimitable style.   Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)  e’Lanka. ...

“A MESSAGE TO EARTHLINGS” – Des Kelly A very special message to everyone who is reading this right now, nobody, so far, has posted an astounding video like the one you are about to see. The words awesome and inspiring only begin to describe Mother Earth as we know her. The accompanying message by Carl Sagan is about as perfect as prose can ever be, My special th anks go out to Christopher Lawton O.A.M., for sending this to me.  I totally agree with every word spoken by Carl Sagan, and thank him for this important message to Earthlings. God has created the Universe we see in this video. We are each just a tiny grain on a sandy beach to Him and we have to remember that our Planet is also akin to the same sandy beach, in numbers of other Planets the Almighty has created as well. Please ...

“THE CHILDRENS’ BOOKSHOP” By Desmond Kelly Six years before “Sooriya” even came into being, I met this beautiful couple, Dulcie and Gerald Wicramasooriya at the above-mentioned shop, in the heart of Colombo Fort, not far from the old H.M.Cy.S. Gemunu Naval barracks, wher I ended up, as a Supply Assistant. The Childrens’ Bookshop was the first business of Dulcie and Gerald, where there were plenty of books and magazines I could brouse through, whenever I was “on-liberty” from my Naval duties, and it was Gerald himself, who sold the very first copy of my recording of Dreamworld after it arrived from Holland.            Since Sooriya was taken over by the family, after I had already migrated to Australia, I still kept in-touch with them via Secretary Yasanthi Nanyakkara, hence this newsletter to me, periodically. It does bring back many memories, (the only reminiscing ...

OUR “SHANGRI-LA” – by Des Kelly    As I have always said and written, a song can depict a story in a few verses and a chorus or two, in comparison to a book, which takes many chapters, thousands of words, and perhaps hundreds of scripted pages, in order to convey the message needed. However, while a good book is an essential attribute in anyone’s life, and once you have learned to read, an education in it’s own right, there is one little problem here. Books do not contain the enhancement of Music in them, and good music with meaningful lyrics in a song is what this article is all about.  Recently, while I was watching “You-tube”, I was very impressed in a song performed by Mark Knopfler and Emmy Lou Harris, another duo extraordinaire of Showbiz. I have always admired Mark, both as a Vocalist and Guitarist, and Emmy ...

CLIMATE CHANGE !! – by Des Kelly           A little message to me from Maxwell Gerreyn, forwarded with the best of intentions, and accepted because any WWW that reminds me of a Canine, male OR female, will always get special attention from a dog-lover like me, even though I don’t have a clue as to who Plimer is. Climate-Change has once again scored the flavour of many months to come, until at least the upcoming elections in Australia, and, BTW, talking about climate change, if you are feeling flustered, hot or humid, wherever you are, why not score a pleasant CC and come to Melbourne, where the weather, even as I write this introduction, is a cool, clear 12 degrees in the shade of the Coolibah tree, where I sit.           Desmond Kelly. Amazing Grace – by Des Kelly     You play it anywhere, and most people know this song which is now also considered a hymn, but again, you ask them who wrote this beautiful musical tribute to our Creator, and, without a shadow of a doubt, hardly anyone will know the Composer. Unfortunately, this is true of many of the songs we hear so often, and even listen to, often. Therefore, my thanks go out to Keith Bennett, for his answer via video, with regard to the song that I personally love, and have sung many times, during my career.           Desmond Kelly. “A COUNTRY LIVING LEGEND” – by Des Kelly HE IS ONE OF A VERY FEW ACTUAL LIVING LEGENDS OF COUNTRY MUSIC, OR THE “MUSIC OF LIFE”, AS I REFER TO IT. HAS BEEN AROUND WITH PAST ICONS (IN MY BOOK), SUCH AS MERLE HAGGARD, GEORGE JONES, RAY PRICE, AND CHARLEY PRIDE, TO NAME JUST A FEW, STILL PLAYS AN ACOUSTIC/ELECTRIC GUITAR THAT HAS CERTAINLY SEEN BETTER DAYS, NAMED TRIGGER (AFTER ROY ROGER’S HORSE), HAS “BEEN THERE & DONE THAT”, WITH THE BEST OF THEM, INCLUDING THE LATE, GREAT WAYLON JENNINGS, HE CERTAINLY LOOKS THE PART, AND HIS AGE, AND DOES NOT EVER BOTHER TO EVEN TRY TO LOOK ANY YOUNGER THAN HE IS, ALTHOUGH WILLIE NELSON WAS QUITE A HANDSOME YOUNG DUDE DURING HIS HALCYON DAYS, QUITE A FEW YEARS AGO. WHAT STRUCK ME ABOUT WILLIE NELSON WAS HIS “STYLE” OF SINGING. SURE, HIS TONES ARE SLIGHTLY MORE NASAL THAN ...

“I LOVE MY PUSSYCAT” – by Des Kelly (A KELLY-KLASSIC)           In addition to beautiful Portia, my final-feline, who unfortunately, had to be gently put down by my Vet., because of diabetes (yes folks, cats get diabetes too), I have suddenly come across this Dutch Group of three singing sisters, Marieanne, Betty, and Toni Kowalczyk who called themselves “Pussycat”. Just for the record, Toni, the youngest sister, and lead vocalist changed her name after she married, but nonetheless, they were considered to be one of the best female groups in the Netherlands, and for good reason, I believe.            I also believe that they did split-up, for personal reasons, deciding to go their own ways, but did regroup a few years later, probably due to the fact that their fans wanted to see them perform together again, and I do not blame ...
