“THE MAGIF OF TECHNICOLOUR” – BY Des Kelly With due thanks to Chris Lawton, once again, something very different for all the highly valued members and readers of e’-Lanka. For me, and doubtless, for many others, these pictures that magically change colour, at the touch of a finger, will quite definitely bring back memories of the days of only black and white films, both at theatres and on television. Please, let us not forget that there are still classic films in black and white, for us to enjoy, but, when the magicof technicolour did come in, it created a whole lot more of enjoyment for the public in general. It was the same with photography. I still remember the days with my old Kodac box camera that could only produce “shots” in black and white. It all seems to be not so very long ago and yet, while time has ...

TO ALL THE DRUNKS OUT THERE – by Des Kelly   Sent out to me by an ex Royal Ceylon Navy friend of mine, reminding me of the good old days when we used to sometimes booze our heads off, when “on liberty”.  Drinking was part and parcel of our life in the Navy, but what we drank and how much, was anybody’s guess. Speaking only for myself, I did drink excessively at times. ...

“BOXCAR BRILLIANCE” – by Des Kelly Merle Ronald Haggard was born in a converted boxcar at Oildale California on the 6th of April 1937. At the tender age of 3 months, his dad & mum noticed him “keeping time” to the radio music outside his bassinet. It was obvious that he already had music on his brain and in his heart. His dad passed on before Merle was even ten years old, leaving his mum to look after the family. Merle turned out to be a little musical rebel, who quickly picked up an old guitar, left by his dad, disobeyed his mum, and, in his early teens, got involved in various unlawful escapades with other young teenagers, getting themselves frequently into trouble with the police and even into jail on several occasions, prompting him to then also become an “escape specialist”, until finally, he really got into big trouble ...

“THAT’S LIFE” – by Des Kelly          “Some interesting oddities”, as Max Gerreyn calls them, and indeed they are. Happening all around us, as we go through, whatever time God has destined for each one of us, we humans do not seem to notice the quaint goings-on, around our World until some intelligent person decides, with the help of photographs, to show us these strange things that are occuring, even a I write this introduction. There is a phrase that tells us, a picture speaks a thousand words, so here we are , ladies and gentlemen, many thousand words that will both interest and educate you, as you read your e’Lanka newsletter.           Desmond Kelly.  (Editor -in-Chief) e’Lanka.   ...

“The ultimate Country love story” – By Des Kelly           He was a “Rock-Star” to begin with, singing and playing his guitar, backed by several guys who became “stars” in their own right, as the years went by. Waylon Jennings, a tall, handsome figure of a man, singing songs in a deep gravelly voice, was an attraction to many gals who attended his shows, who, in reverse, was also attracted to many pretty girls, married three, even becoming a dad, in the process, was then picked out by guitar great, Chet Atkins, who was convinced that this guy would make a superb Country Entertainer, who, not much later, founded the “Outlaw” movement  & together with Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, &  Willie Nelson, began touring and entertaining thousands of Country music fans, wherever they went. A beautiful female by the name of Jessie Colter, now comes into ...

“THE GOOD LIFE” – By Des Kelly How can one forget the halcyon days spent in what was once our lovely Island home ?. I will never forget them. Things are much different now, from an older perspective, I am afraid. Ceylon was this Island paradise that I was lucky to call “home”, eternal summer, days and weekends spent having a glorious time on beaches surrounding the Island, spotless beaches, without any rubbish strewn around, thosai shops, where we could have a good feed, followed by milk-coffee, or kiri-kopi, to wash it down for a couple or three rupees, a Peacock or “5 Roses” fag, afterwards, costing about 2 cents a-piece, to strut around with, showing how grown-up we were, at around fifteen years of age, Picture-palaces such as the Regal, Liberty, Savoy, Plaza etc., where, for a 50cent gallery ticket, we could watch great movies coming all the way ...

“TECHNO-MEAT” – by Des Kelly           Thank you Max Gerreyn for sending this amazing dietary information for all of us, at e’Lanka. We do not have to go to the Wellawatte or Bambalapitiya beef markets anymore, as we used to, in order to grab chunks of beef hung on large hooks, pay big prices and take it home for the cook-ammays to prepare it for us hungry buggers to eat for dinner. Pork was also exhibited in the same way, but on a side, completely away from the meat, because of the ones who didn’t like pig-flesh. Of course there were fish-markets as well, with the favourite thora-malu, prawns, crabs etcetera for those Catholics who would not eat meat on fridays, and others who preferred to eat fish, period.  I remember that our family could only afford to have chicken about twice a year, and even ...

VALE’ MELROY PASSE’ De SILVA – By Des Kelly Photo Souce: Sooriya Very sadly, I now pass on this news to everyone who knew him, a most simple, humble guy, yet truly, one of the VERY BEST GUITARISTS to have left our lovely Island Home, to settle with his family in Keysborough, Melb., Victoria, many years ago.           With due respect to many other superb Sri Lankan players of this instrument, now living in Australia, I have to say that although I had heard about Melroy performing his magic together with Gazali Amit (another guitar-great), at the Galle-Face Hotel, in the heart of Colombo, I did not have the privilege of knowing him personally ...
