DESMOND KELLY

“THE GYPSIES’ KUSSIYA” – By Des Kelly      It was in 1973 (or was it 72 ?), I remember this Gentleman named Anton Perera inviting me to his most beautiful home in Ratmalana, to audition his young Gypsy Band. I was on my first trip back home, from Melbourne, where I was resident from 1962, and, for the first time I met this remarkable man who had founded the Gypsies, giving his sons, including the late, great Sunil Perera every given opportunity of forming this band, organizing a fully equipped basement “studio” where Sunil and the boys could practice their musical repertoire in the hope of becoming a most famous Sri Lankan Band. Anton Perera paid for everything required, including a salary for each member of the Gypsies, for the hours spent each day, just to achieve the high standards of musical ability ...

“TWO TICKETS FOR CRICKET” – By Des Kelly           “It matters not, if you win or lose, it’s how you play the game”, another grand phrase that must never be forgotten. Unfortunately, this is NOT the state of affairs, at the moment. Now, it seems to be “It matters not, what game you play, it’s WIN, at any cost”. This fascinating Cricket Story comes to e’Lanka via two Gentlemen that I must now thank, B.Wouters ( I think the “B” stands for Brian), and an old friend of ours, namely Keith Bennett. Thanks again, guys. Do keep sending us these stories of interest in to e’Lanka and we will do the rest. Please enjoy the story, everybody.           Desmond Kelly. (Editor -in-Chief) e’Lanka. History of world cup—full credit to India, Pakis and SL for breaking MCC backbone   India won ...

“LAUGH A LITTLE”!!.   We will hopefully be able to laugh a little bit MORE, after all these many lockdowns are over, when we can finally move around again, if only to see how silly our new World is fast beginning.            Thank you, once again, Maxie, for these little tidbits of humour. I am sure that e’Lanka readers will enjoy reading them, if only to eradicate a lot of boredom that Victoria’s present lockdown is causing us at the moment.           Desmond Kelly. “COUNTRY ROYALTY” – by Des Kelly   He died at 64 years of age, in 2002, after having suffered multiple complications of the dreaded diabetes, yet another cursed disease inflicted on humankind, and especially on those who have, what is called a “sweet-tooth”. Waylon Jennings, was first discovered by the Guitar-Genius Chet Atkins, who noticed this handsome young guy, singing and playing his special guitar, rock-style, at a Club, somewhere in the good old U.S.A. Chet (Chester) Atkins, in my own humble opinion,is another member of Country Royalty in that, to me, he was undoubtedly the BEST Lead/Rhythm guitarist in the World, of his era, and few will argue that he continues to be the same as years go by. (R.I.P. Chet.) ...

“BOUNTIFUL BANANAS” – by Des Kelly Source: https://www.poemhunter.com/poem/banana-7/           We used to call them Plantains in Ceylon of the good old days, as I remember them. There were many wonderful varieties, like Kohlikuttu, Aana-maalu, Suwendel, etcetera, and I even remember the tiniest plantain which was named the Sugar-banana by the British, I suppose, because this is where the name “Banana” came from. Being a fruit that was readily available back home, I became very fond of them and would sometimes make quite a meal of them, buying beautiful combs of the fruit, ripened to exactly how much I preferred them to be, from the banana palace in Wellawatte, for just a couple of rupees, per comb.  I loved to choose bananas that were not over-ripe in the slightest, because once they started to show brown spots on the peel, the fruit would very quickly lose their ...

Buckingham Palace – by Des Kelly “THE PALACE”           “EXTRAORDINARY”, is perhaps the most unique description of this building in the heart of London. My thanks to Chris. Lawton who recently forwarded this astounding video of the “place” that is more or less the home and office of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the 2nd, the longest reigning Monarch in history to date. This palace, plus all the other magnificent castles, etcetera, that are owned by this Queen is a worthwhile reward for a Monarch who, in my opinion, fully deserves everything she has been granted in life, as she has practically given all her long years in life, simply to benefit her people, both in England, and the Commonwealth of Countries that come under her reign. Queen Elizabeth has been a most praiseworthy Ruler, having promised her Father, King George the 6th, at a very early ...

“BACK HOME AGAIN” – By Des Kelly They say that a change is as good as a holiday, so here, for a change, is a poetic change that beats any holiday that I could think of, right at the moment.            Once again, the Author is unknown, for reasons best known to themselves, of course, but the “work” on this poem, simply called “Home” is superb, in my opinion, and I have written many meaningful poems in my day. Here it is, ladies and gentlemen, as kindly sent to me, by my good friend Arthur Speldewinde. This will certainly bring back some precious memories.           “IF I COULD FLY AWAY”.          Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)  e’Lanka.     ...

COUNTRY SHAKESPEARE – BY Des Kelly    “For the good times”, just one of the many songs written by the man referred to, as the above, a title that I have bestowed on Kris Kristofferson, the reason being that Compositions in Music written by ordinary Lyricists and Composers, myself included, are generally “love-songs” poetically phrased, and (hopefully), telling a story, whether happy or sad, just as Authors do their thing, in the millions of books they produce. Of course, there are millions of Authors too, BUT, there was, is, and will be,  only the ONE WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. ...

“GARDEN HUMOUR” – By Des Kelly    Thank you, Charles, for your “drift-back” into the good old days of gardening, as we knew it, well, you probably do anyway, because, while I always enjoyed a good garden, personally, even a weed that I decided to plant, for whatever reason, would not grow. They say that opposites matter however, and the beautiful gardens of our homes were always the work of my ex-wife Cynthia, R.I.P. She loved  gardening, so, being an understanding husband, I always left her to do what she enjoyed doing.  She knew that, as a gardener, I was a good guitarist.        I am sure that readers of e’Lanka will peruse this post, so thank you again, for sending it in. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. You will chuckle as you read this …. Because as stupid as it may sound, this is exactly what we do! ...

Generation Gap – by Des Kelly A most interesting comparison between the two present generations. We never really stop to think about this particular subject nowadays, but when I did receive this post from my good friend Chris Lawton, I decided that here was something that all e’Lanka readers would love to read, and so be it.  As I have always said, there is nothing better than reading interesting articles that tell it exactly as it is, so thank you, Chris., for your contribution to e’Lanka.   Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. Generation Gap – A  most  unhappy  conclusion. Comparison between the two  present  “Generations” . A youngster asked his father: “How did you people live before with- No access to technology No aeroplanes No internet No computers No dramas No TVs No air cons No cars No mobile phones?” His Dad replied: “Just like how your generation lives today with – ...
