DESMOND KELLY

“FROM THE HART OF GINA” – By Des Kelly Coming from the wealthiest woman in this great brown land of Australia, and possibly one of the wealthiest women in the whole wide world, is a WARNING that needs to be heeded by the poorer mortals around our globe, (which most of us are), compared to her, unfortunate, as this seems.        While being unpopular at times, even with her immediate family, Gina Rinehart, (who was undoubtedly her father’s daughter), has managed to oversee the HUGE estates of iron-ore, of Lang Hancock, and keeps getting richer by billions of dollars, even as I write this introduction (2.2 billion just from December, 2020 to May 2021, as an example, and although I did notice that she has been rather quiet, since the present pandemic hit earth, being the very active public figure she has  been, I have ...

“KINROSS KATASTROPHE”.- Des Kelly   While feeling a bit sad about it, I would like to thank Maxie Gerreyn for sending me the story and disastrous photographs of the old Kinross Swimming and Life-saving Club, because my brother Ian, who has been re-christened by Max, and named Mala-Kelly, was once the Captain of Kinross, as I remember it, and did his share of life-saving there, including this writer himself, who is, by all accounts, a much better singer than a swimmer, and once (or twice, to be exact), swam out to the reef, over there, about 500 yards away from the shore in Wellawatte, because the waves of the Indian Ocean practically carried me to my destination, and then, much to my consternation, found that I could not swim back to the shore, which, for some reason, seemed to be miles away. I swam and swam, ...

“MUSIC HATH CHARMS” – By Des Kelly   He was one of the most highly rated “Comics” of his era, his one-liners, on—stage, will never be forgotten, once heard. He would relate a story in detail, an example being how one of his friends made an impromptu  appointment with a doctor on a particular day, AT a particular time, etc., begging of his neighbour for a “ride” to the doctors, because his own car had broken down and was in the process of being repaired, even as they spoke. He would then speak of the repair shop, and “yaba yaba yaba”, until his friend, simply to stop him talking so much, said “ok, ok, OK., hop into my car and I will take you for your appointment”  . He gets in the car, and is strangely silent, until he is in his doctors room. He complains to the doctor that ...

“UP YOUR’S”!! – By Des Kelly  Is a favourite phrase of most Aussies when faced with some bloody ignoramus trying to teach them correct English. This famous phrase is accompanied normally by an erect middle finger, clearly pointing upward to indicate just how upset they are, shoved-up practically into the nostrils of their tutor. The tutor gives up and goes home, up and away, so to speak. Now, without going upstream any further, here is a second helping of this unusual, very common, two-letter word that I would advise everyone to read. ...

“TO THOSE, CONCERNED” – By Des Kelly   A video that essential viewing, especially to all our Sri Lankan friends. This was sent to me, by Charles Schokman, and I thank him for it, on behalf of e’Lanka, all of whose members are hopefully animal-lovers, and would certainly love to watch this superb bit of work carried out by the Sri Lankan Navy, of whom I have  always been proud.  How this incident came about, I haven’t a clue, but this just goes to show what a bit of “caring” can do. Please watch this video folks, and be uplifted.            Desmond Kelly.  (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka.     ...

“BAMBALAPITIYA BEAUTIES” – By Des Kelly  The memories keep flooding back. Very nearly 60 years ago, this writer reluctantly decided, like so many other Burghers, to emigrate to places like Australia, England, Canada etcetera, in order to escape what was termed the “Sinhala-only” policy brought in by the Sri Lankan Government of the era.  I was only around 26 years old at the time, with a young family, having actually moved from the famous Town of Bambalapitiya, (or Colombo 4, as I think it was also called), after marrying a girl from the Town of Dehiwala, but that is indeed a different story to be divulged later.  ...

“KOTHAMULLI” – By Des Kelly    This interesting song, based on a Sri Lankan medicinal drink, quite often forced on us as children, was sent in to me via Roland Phillips and Keith Bennett who, for some reason, also urged me to Stray safe. No problem, Keith, I cannot stray anywhere, at the moment, but I have suddenly taken quite a liking to Kothamulli, so much so, that I have decided to introduce this drink to over twenty five thousand e’Lanka members around the World.  Thank you, Roland and Keith.    Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)  eLanka ...

MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC – by Des Kelly     “IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LIFE, PLAY ON”, is a phrase that is common everywhere, and in every walk of life. Our thanks go out to both Keith Ockersz and Keith Bennett. I was most surprised with the vocal ability of all these characters, but it seems that NOTHING surprises me anymore. Feeling proud that e’Lanka can introduce these new “Stars” to tge World, i will now let all of you enjoy this startling video.   Desmond Kelly (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka.   ...

“LEGS ELEVEN” – by Des Kelly           Compliments of Charmaine Gunatillake and Keith Bennett, this both very interesting AND very important “post” comes walking in, to us, at e’Lanka. Unfortunately, it was just a little bit too late for this writer, who is, right now, the “guru” of isolation simply because my legs and feet refuse to let me walk more than a few metres because of an ailment that has got to be pronounced while totally sober. This is the Mother of Arthritis, called Ankylosin Spondylitis. Anyway, thank goodness I can still write a little. I will now rest my briefcase and once again say “thank you” to Charmaine and Keith, and let these boots keep walking back to you, good folk of e’Lanka. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)  e’Lanka. Walking *Aging   starts   from  the  feet  upwards !*     KEEP  YOUR   LEGS  ACTIVE  &  STRONG  !! As  ...

“ANOTHER DAMN SCAM” – by Des Kelly     Something that I do not have to worry about anymore, and, for the moment, this applies to many people, but just as Fawlty Towers reminds us, we could quite possibly have to indulge in hotel-stays from time to time, after Covid 19 is no longer a threat. However, that being the case, Hotel-Scams come into being, once again, and there are NO Vaccinations for them.            I have to thank my friend Dallas Achilles for this “post” and decided to share it with all members of e’Lanka. ...
