DESMOND KELLY

“WILD PARENTS” …….. As Keith Bennett tells us, it would be almost impossible to secure photographs such as these, but this also goes to show that if you really want to attempt something that is pretty difficult to accomplish, keep trying, and you will succeed. Enjoy the expertly-taken photographs folks, and let us congratulate the photographer/s who did manage to give us some amazing shots. A big thank you to Keith Bennett as well. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka.   Many of these photos seem almost impossible to get, but here they are.   “I am thankful for small mercies. I compared notes with one of my friends   who expects everything of the universe, and is disappointed when anything is less than the best, and I found that I begin at the other extreme, expecting nothing, and am always full of thanks for moderate goods.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson ...

Silent Night – the origin of the hymn – by Des Kelly ELanka’s best friend, Cartoonist, Master-Painter and a family-man, Maxwwll Gerreyn has introduced this Christmas Hymn in his own inimitable fashion, so let us now try to find out the origins of a Christmaa Hymn that most of us have been singing from the time we were all only knee-high to the grasshoppers around us. Take it away Max, and thank you. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. A delightful  tale of detection and discovery…I reckon its TRUE The song ‘Silent Night’ is by far the most symbolic of Christmas carols. It is understandable, then, that we might wonder about the origin of such an extraordinary song. To tell the story of its origins we must start at the court of Frederick William of Prussia, the fourth king of that name, just after his ascension to the throne in 1840. ...

“MUSIC, ART & DRAMA” – by Des Kelly How can I forget. At St.Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya, in Colombo, Ceylon (at the time), during the late 1940s, this writer was introduced to a very young Rev.Fr.Noel Cruz, who happened to be the founder of the Music, Art & Drama Society, as it was called, where young schoolboys with any singing or acting talent were encouraged by this young, handsome Priest, to further their talents, by organizing concerts and/or musical shows to be proudly presented to the public. Fr.Cruz accepted me into this group.on the recommendation of our Art Master of the era, who was fondly referred to, as Papa deNiese who had heard me sing in the Church Choir and reckoned that I didn’t do too bad a job, with all the Latin Hymns I had taught myself, as an Altar-server who sang anything quite naturally, for the love of doing ...

CLARENCE WIJEWARDENA – by Des Kelly   Quarter of a century has already elapsed since we lost him. Clarence Wijewardena was, in my opinion, at the very apex of the tree of Musical Composers that Sri Lanka has ever produced, and there have been, and still are, many others. It was in 1963, just a year after I migrated to Melbourne, that I first heard his song Dilhani, just fell in love with the tune and rendition by Indrani Perera, and decided on the spot, to write an English Version to this beautiful tune which I named My Lovely Island Home. Of course, I could not record this English Version of my song without written permission from Clarence. I cannot remember where he was living at the time, but I did write him a lerter which he promptly replied, giving me his permission and thereby I went ahead and recorded ...

“THE MORE, THE MERRIER” – by Des Kelly I had no inkling about this, had not even heard this strange word “Veblen”, until this true story came to me via my ex-Naval friend Christopher Lawton OAM, who haa recently supplied us at e’Lanka, with some very interesting tidbits about famous people, who did strange things to actually benefit ordinary folk like us, in the long run. This story, believe it or not, is about Caesar, yes, Julius, who, having not much else to do, founded THE VEBLEN EFFECT. Actually, it does not AFFECT the less AFFLUENT, but since we have not read too much about Julius recently, let us remedy the situation, forget about Cleopatra for the moment, and concentrate on the Founder of the VEBLEN EFFECT. Luckily, it is still in force, and perhaps one of your close friends may still have some use for it. Enough said. Desmond Kelly. ...

Songs by Desmond Kelly from Charles Schokman Today, (Tuesday 30th November) I took advantage of the last day of spring and spent most of my time in the garden, a place I love to be. It was a beautiful morning and I enjoyed the peace and tranquility it provided. Gardening is my hobby and at the age of 92 I could not find a better way to be out enjoying the beauty of nature amidst the fresh air, the wavering of the tree branches, the fragrance of flowers and the chirping of the birds. As the clock kept ticking the temperature gradually increased and once it reached 30 degrees I realised the need to relax indoors. Whilst in a vacant and pensive mood, feeling half asleep the phone rang and to my delight it was from my good friend Desmond Kelly, affectionately known as Des. Over a brief conversation he ...

“EACH SONG, A STORY” – by Des Kelly   Each song tells a story. As I always say, a songwriter tells, or SHOULD tell a story in every song, he or she writes. Lyrics should be written, explaining in brief, the story and/or as to why it was written. There are two songs involved here. The first is “Save the last dance for me”, sent in by my good friend Arthur Speldewinde, and the 2nd, “No Country Music For Old Men”, written by David Bellamy of the Bellamy Bros., featuring also, another Country vocalist named John Anderson. This is sent out to many thousands of e’Lanka Members and Readers around the World, by “your’s truly”, who necessarily does not agree with the 2nd song, as I believe ...
