Dear Sirs,

As a proud dual citizen of Australia currently living in Sri Lanka, I eagerly look forward to returning to Australia for holidays. My dreams are still connected to my adopted country. These visits hold special meaning for me as I reflect on the remarkable bond that has developed between our two nations over the past 75 years. It brings me immense joy to witness how this relationship has flourished, characterised by shared values such as democracy, human rights, and the importance of community. A bond through

technology, Championing youth and women’s rights in Sri Lanka, Improving systems in finance and development, and Championing changes in Sri Lanka’s public sector stand as a testament to the strength of our relationship.

The deepening ties between Sri Lanka and Australia are evident in various areas, including trade, education, and culture. Both countries have shown

mutual respect, strengths, and contributions, fostering an environment of collaboration and support. Additionally, joint initiatives addressing global challenges, such as climate change and economic development,

reflect the commitment to progress. As I prepare for this new chapter, I am filled with hope and excitement for the future of these strong ties and the continued growth of our two great nations.

Diplomatic Ties

The diplomatic relationship between Sri Lanka and Australia forms a crucial foundation for the partnership between our nations. This bond is reflected in numerous high-level visits and meaningful diplomatic dialogues, showcasing our mutual dedication to promoting peace and stability in the region. Australia’s steadfast support in various international forums has played a vital role in confronting global challenges, such as climate change, humanitarian crises, and economic development. We are deeply grateful for their advocacy for Sri Lanka’s interests on the world stage, which underscores a shared commitment to fostering cooperation and understanding between our countries. We continue to work towards a brighter future marked by collaboration and respect for each other’s sovereignty and values.

Educational Exchanges

The emphasis on educational exchanges is a key strength of our bilateral relationship. Countless Sri Lankan students have seized the opportunity to pursue higher education in Australia, acquiring valuable knowledge and skills that they actively contribute to their homeland. In turn, Australian educators and researchers have been significantly impacted

by sharing their expertise with Sri Lankan institutions, which is crucial in building a robust academic community in Sri Lanka.

Disaster Assistance

Australia’s support during times of disaster has truly

exemplified the spirit of friendship and solidarity that characterises the relationship between our two nations. Whether sending crucial aid during natural calamities like tsunamis, floods, or droughts or offering a helping hand in the aftermath of emergencies such as civil unrest or health crises, Australia’s prompt and generous assistance has significantly impacted the lives of countless Sri Lankans.

In times of need, Australia has provided material resources, vital expertise, and personnel to help recover. The compassion and dedication displayed by Australian aid workers on the ground have brought hope and relief to communities affected by these disasters. This unwavering humanitarian support has not only alleviated immediate suffering. Still, it has also strengthened the bond of trust and mutual understanding between our nations, reinforcing a partnership rooted in shared values and a commitment to supporting each other in challenging times.

People-to-People Connections

The connections between the people of Sri Lanka and Australia are essential to our firm and lasting relationship. Through vibrant cultural exchanges, thriving tourism, and meaningful personal connections, the warmth and hospitality shared by our citizens have created a rich tapestry of goodwill and understanding. As we celebrate key milestones, these ties will only grow stronger, paving the way for a future filled with shared prosperity.

Commemorating 75 years of diplomatic relations provides an opportunity to reflect on our remarkable journey together and to look forward with bold anticipation.

Congratulations to Australia for its steadfast commitment to nurturing strong and impactful relationships. Together, we will continue to thrive and unlock countless opportunities for both nations.
