There is a rich history behind Sri Lanka’s bananas, a staple in local culture and cuisine. With origins tracing back to ancient Southeast Asia, bananas have been part of Sri Lanka’s diet for 1000s of years. With 29 varieties available, you’re never too far away from a banana eat!

Popular types include the tart Ambul and the sweet, nutrient-rich Seeni. For dessert lovers, Kolikuttu provides a burst of flamboyant flavours and is often used as religious offering. Athletes and students looking for a quick burst of energy should try the sour-sweet anamalu, while the iconic Cavendish—known globally—is known on the island as Bin Kehel.

The Nethrapalam stands out for its immense size, with each banana reaching up to 12 inches long and 4 pounds in weight!

Sri Lanka’s bananas offer a delicious taste of tradition, with each variety carrying its own unique flavor and cultural significance. Which one do you want to try?
