The Ceylon Society of Australia has had the news of yet another prestigious accolade awarded to Distinguished Professor Buddhima Indraratna, who the CSA was privileged to host as the most interesting speaker at our General Meeting on 2 June.
The Engineers Australia Awards and Gala Dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney was held on 19 September, and Professor Buddhima was honoured to receive Australia’s pinnacle accolade in Civil Engineering, namely the Sir John Holland Civil Engineer of the Year 2024.
He is the first full-time geotechnical academic to win this since its inception in the 1990s as this award is usually won by Structural and Construction Engineers and also mostly by practitioners.
As Professor Buddhima comments about his work, “In essence, it is about bridging the gap between academia and industry, as well as embracing multidisciplinary R&D approaches to meet the future challenges for Civil Engineers, including the perspectives of circular economy and enhancing the traditional civil engineering concepts with digital technology and AI”.
This signal achievement follows Professor Buddhima winning the global 2024 International Civil Engineer Award from the Jose E Ibarra Foundation, UPM and ACCIONA, in Madrid in May.
Australia recognised Distinguished Professor Buddhima’s significant contribution to the field of engineering and honoured him in the 2024 Honours List with the Order of Australia, AM.
We Sri Lankans take pride in the honours and distinctions achieved by this scion of our motherland – congratulations to you Distinguished Professor Buddhima Indraratna! Our very best wishes for your continued success in your profession.
