The wedding of London educated daughter Yasodhara of Sri Lanka’s former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and a Consultant medical practitioner Roger Walker was announced in London’s Daily Telegraph newspaper in a paid advertisement about three weeks ago.

Following the British tradition of calling Consultant level medical practitioners as Mister the Telegraph advertisement called the groom as Mr.R.H.M. Walker and the just passed out young doctor bride as Dr.M.Y.S. Kumaratunga.

According to the Daily Telegraph advertisement which appeared June 16 2007 the marriage took place at Fawsley Hall in London between Mr. R.M.H. Walker and Dr. M.Y.S. Kumaratunga.
The advertisement simply said the bride is the daughter of Mrs. C.B.Kumaratunga of Colombo and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. M.J.H. Walker of Swanage, Dorset in the United Kingdom.
Apart from the bride’s bachelor uncle Anura Bandaranaike, who could not elevate his matrimonial status higher than from the best man at Mahinda Rajapksa’s wedding, the only other well known politician invited for the function was Chandrika’s best political ally who does not believe in marriage at all, Mr. Mangala Samaraweera who is openly inviting her to lead whatever political alliance he forms. Strangely, the latest political ally of the former controversial politician, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was a notable absentee at the wedding. It is not known whether he was invited for the London wedding which allegedly cost 500,000 British pounds.

Sri Lanka’s corporate raider and millionaire business man Harry Jayawardena and other businessman friend of Chandrika Ranjan Eumo were among the Sri Lankan list of invitees along with sister Sunethra Bandaranaike.

Except those handful of people the majority at the wedding were relatives and friends of the Walker family and Chandrika’s foreign friends.

[We received] some of the wedding photographs now circulated among the bride’s friends in London. The photos show the stocky and matronly figure of Chandrika with her latest short hair style and her son Vimukthi.
