Collingwood
The talking cat Collingwood is the manuscript’s most audacious invention and, remarkably, one of its most successful. The device could easily have felt whimsical or strained, but it works because the author uses Collingwood not for easy comedy but for genuine insight; the cat becomes a conscience, a mirror, a philosopher, and ultimately a friend. The scenes between Collingwood and Sundaram Pillai are some of the novel’s finest writing, and Collingwood’s final days, including the hospital gathering to say farewell, carry real emotional weight. The author has pulled off something genuinely difficult: a magical realist element that feels completely earned.
Sundaram Pillai as Narrator and Protagonist
Sundaram Pillai is an outstanding creation. He is observant, principled, quietly funny, and deeply human. His interior life is rich and honest; he is not immune to desire, envy, or anger, but he reasons his way through his emotions with a discipline that feels authentic rather than aspirational. His response to racism, in particular, is handled with impressive nuance. He neither minimises it nor allows it to define him. His decision not to sue the hospital, rooted not in weakness but in a considered understanding of what he values and why, is one of the novel’s most mature and resonant moments.

The novel is an exceptional document of multicultural Melbourne, and of the migrant experience more broadly. Sharon
Sharon is one of the more complex female characters in recent Australian fiction of this kind. She is maddening and fascinating in equal measure, a deeply damaged woman whose intelligence and beauty function simultaneously as gifts and weapons. The novel resists the easy judgments her behaviour might invite and maintains, to the end, a genuine ambiguity about who she is and what she wants. Her storyline has real dramatic tension and builds to a genuinely surprising conclusion.
