From Headlines to Heartlands: Sinhala Version of Global Documentary on Sri Lanka Premieres in Colombo
Beena Sarwar’s International Documentary on Sri Lanka, adapted by Priyantha Pradeep Ranasinghe in Sinhala, screened at the Colombo Press Institute as well.
The Sinhala version of Beena Sarwar’s international documentary ‘Democracy in Debt: Sri Lanka – Beyond the Headlines’, which was produced and translated into Sinhala by Priyantha Pradeep Ranasinghe,
was screened on the July 30 at the Sri Lanka Press Institute, Colombo,
The event was attended by Beena Sarwar, a Pakistani multimedia journalist who is currently residing in US, and the producer of the original film, Senior journalist Priyantha Pradeep Ranasinghe, who translated it into Sinhala, along with number of print, electronic and digital journalists, journalism students and social activists.
On the 29th, the Sinhala version was screened for the Minister of Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, and the heads of the state’s television media at the Department of Government Information.
That afternoon, the Sinhala version was screened and a discussion was held for the students of the Department of Sinhala and Mass Communication, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Beena Sarwar and Priyantha Pradeep Ranasinghe also participated in those events.
Dr. Sinharaja Tammita-Delgoda has contributed by co-directing and co-writing the original production, Why this is important for Sri Lanka is that this film predicts the social revolution and political transformation brought about by last year’s presidential election. This is also the first time that a international documentary has been produced in Sinhala.
The open screening at the Press Institute also led to a high-level discussion on the relationship between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, as well as global politics, economics, and social conditions.
The Sinhala production, translation and consultation of the documentary, titled ‘ණය ප්රජාතන්ත්රවාදය: ශ්රී ලංකාව – සිරස්තලවලින් ඔබ්බට’, was done by Priyantha Pradeep Ranasinghe, who has over 20 years of experience in print, electronic and new media in Sri Lanka and has worked as a journalist in leading media institutions.
Beena Sarwar who produced the original in English, is a multimedia journalist, editor and documentary filmmaker.
She has held senior editorial positions in Pakistani print and television media and has been on the founding teams of several key media initiatives, including Himal Southasian magazine and Panos South Asia.
Beena Sarwar produced this 25-minute documentary about Sri Lanka in English last year, which was supported by the Pulitzer Center in the United States.
Shooted in a remote village (Dutuwewa) as well as in Colombo, the film provides a multi-layered narrative about the universal challenges of governance, accountability and enduring hopes for democratic aspirations. It is relevant not only to Sri Lanka but also to anywhere where people are struggling to defend democracy and accountability, including India, Bangladesh and the United States.
The film was screened in several countries, including Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the United States, ahead of Sri Lanka’s recent presidential election. Its critical success is evident from screenings across five continents, in nearly 20 countries and at nearly 80 venues. Positive media reviews from The Wire in India to Dawn in Pakistan further confirms that success

එදින පස්වරුවේ ශ්රී ජයවර්ධනපුර විශ්වවිද්යාලයේ, මානව ශාස්ත්ර හා සමාජීය විද්යා පීඨයේ, සිංහල හ ජන සන්නිවේදන දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ ජන සන්නිවේදන සිසුන් සඳහා සිංහල අනුවාදය ප්රදර්ශනය කර සාකච්ඡාවක්ද පවත්වනු ලැබීය. එම අවස්ථාවන්ටද බීනා සාර්වා සහ ප්රියන්ත ප්රදීප් රණසිංහ එක්ව සිටියහ.
මුල් නිෂ්පාදනයේ සම අධ්යක්ෂණයෙන්, සම පිටපත් රචනයෙන්, ආචාර්ය සිංහරාජ තම්මිට-දෙල්ගොඩ දායක වී ඇත.
මෙය ශ්රී ලංකාවට වැදගත් වන්නේ, පසුගිය වසරේ ජනාධිපතිවරණය මගින් ඇති කරන ලද සමාජ විප්ලවය සහ දේශපාලන පරිවර්තනය පිළිබඳව මෙම චිත්රපටය පුරෝකථනය කිරීමයි. එමෙන්ම, විදේශීය වාර්තා චිත්රපටයක් සිංහලෙන් නිෂ්පාදනය කරන ලද පළමු අවස්ථාව මෙයයි.

බීනා සාර්වා ශ්රී ලංකාව ගැන පසුගිය වසරේදී ඉංග්රීසියෙන් නිෂ්පාදනය කළ මිනිත්තු 25ක මෙම වාර්තා චිත්රපටයට, ඇමරිකා එක්සත්ජ නපදයේ Pulitzer Center හි අනුග්රහය ලැබී තිබිණි.
