Melbourne-based charity, Turning Hope Into Action (THIA) has joined with La Moneta Foundation to stage a special screening of Godless: The East Field Exorcism – a 2023 Australian horror film directed by Nick Kozakis, written by Alexander Angliss-Wilson – at 2.30pm on Sunday 26 November at Cinema 1, ACMI, Fed Square, Melbourne.

The film has a line-up of Australian stars including Georgia Eyers, Dan Ewing, Tim Pocock, Rosie Traynor and Eliza Matengu.

Shot in the Shire of Hepburn Springs, Victoria the film tells the story of Lara a woman tormented – torn between science and faith. Pushed by her husband to seek treatment from a congregation of zealots, a ruthless exorcist tries to save her soul by putting an innocent woman through hell.

Based on true events some 30 years ago, this confronting piece has been critically and commercially received globally – a demonstration of the power of storytelling with themes that are still relevant today.

Rated MA15+ Godless is produced by Timothy Whiting, Lauren Simpson and Tony Coombs.

Treasurer of THIA and Sri Lankan-born Beverley Pinder OAM says that Godless is one of those Aussie films that while low budget, it has tried something different.

“Aussie films are always worth supporting and when it comes to the nexus of mental illness and faith, the producers have tried hard to entertain while delivering a strong message on how desperate and grim these experiences were as recently as the ‘90s.

“I am hoping that interest is there from the community to support a good cause with proceeds going towards peer support work to help those experiencing homelessness.”
