Jetavanaramaya - anuradhapura

  1. Location: Jetavanaramaya is situated in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, which is located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka.
  2. Construction: The stupa was built during the reign of King Mahasena (273-301 AD) of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. It took nearly 15 years to complete and stands as a testament to ancient Sri Lankan engineering and architectural prowess.

Dimensions: Jetavanaramaya stands approximately 122 meters (400 feet) in height, making it the tallest stupa in the world and the third tallest ancient structure in the world. The base of the stupa covers an area of about 2.3 hectares (5.7 acres).

  1. Architectural Features: The stupa is constructed in a bell-shaped design and is made of bricks, with intricate carvings and decorative elements. It is surrounded by a stone terrace and features several smaller structures within its complex.
  2. Relics and Significance: Jetavanaramaya is said to have enshrined relics of the Buddha, making it an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. It holds immense religious and historical importance, symbolizing the spread of Buddhism in Sri Lanka during ancient times.
  3. Restoration and Preservation: Over the centuries, Jetavanaramaya faced damage and deterioration due to natural causes and human activities. However, it has undergone extensive restoration efforts in recent years to preserve its architectural and cultural heritage.
  4. Visitor Experience: Jetavanaramaya is open to visitors, allowing them to explore the stupa complex, admire its architectural grandeur, and pay homage to the sacred site. Visitors are advised to follow appropriate etiquette and respect the religious significance of the temple.

Visiting Jetavanaramaya provides an opportunity to immerse oneself in Sri Lanka’s rich Buddhist heritage and witness the magnificence of ancient architecture. It serves as a reminder of the country’s historical legacy and spiritual traditions.
