Melbourne Peterites Remember Their Mates at Moving Memorial Mass - By Lawrence Machado

The Old Boys of St Peter’s College, Colombo, remembered their late college mates at their annual memorial service on July 6th (the Sunday after the feast of St Peter) at The Resurrection Church in Keysborough, Victoria.

The book with the names of the recently departed Peterites was taken to the altar, along with the college flag and scarf, at the start of the mass.

The lively Peterite choir included Rodney Patternott (keyboards and piano), his son Ryan (guitar), Treherne Pereira (guitar), Murray Moldrich, Rienzie Machado & their wives.

The moving service, which commenced  in 2014 by the late Dalston de Rozario and Rienzie Machado, has grown over the years from small beginnings, with strong support from the Old Peterite Social Club and former Peterites in Melbourne.

This year, a total of $650 was raised for the Fred Hollows Foundation, which had a special place for Dalston, so that the Peterites could contribute and honour on behalf of their loved past schoolmates.

The names of Peterites who passed away during the last 12months were read out during the traditional fellowship that followed after mass. Pictures of the Peterites being remembered were also displayed during the fellowship.

This year, they also remembered some extended family members who have traditionally attended this annual service.

While the Peterites shared the food that was donated, they renewed their friendship & shared their stories. At the end of the afternoon, the college anthem was sung with gusto and pride, bringing together all the college boys.

Rienzie, who coordinated the service, thanked everyone who attended the mass and contributed to the service and catering, especially the wives of Peterites.

“We had a very good turnout and we are grateful to the Peterite wonder wives who helped with the catering and distribution of food,” he said.

“I hope everyone who attended this year brings another Peterite for the service next year.”
