A Sanctuary of Silence in Sri Lanka Is Calling on Australia for Help

Nisala Foundation

Nisala Foundation has offered meditation, accommodation and spiritual guidance free of charge for years. Now, it needs support to create space for the growing number of people seeking peace.

In a world that has become louder, faster and more emotionally exhausting, silence has become a rare privilege.

For many people living with stress, anxiety, grief, burnout or an overwhelming sense of disconnection, finding a safe place to pause can be life-changing. Hidden among the peaceful natural surroundings of Sri Lanka is one such place: Nisala Foundation, a charitable meditation centre where people are welcomed not according to their financial capacity, but according to their sincere wish to find peace.

Nisala has continued to provide meditation teachings, food, accommodation and spiritual support through the generosity of donors and well-wishers. Its programs are offered on a donation basis, allowing people from different backgrounds to participate even when they may not be able to afford commercial retreat fees.

Today, however, the Foundation has reached a turning point.

The Demand for Peace Has Outgrown the Space

More local and international participants are applying to attend Nisala’s residential retreats and meditation programs. Yet the existing meditation hall and accommodation facilities can no longer comfortably serve the growing number of people seeking guidance.

The current hall has limited capacity, and retreat applications often exceed the space available. Nisala has therefore begun an urgent expansion project to build a larger meditation hall and additional dormitory facilities.

This is not simply a construction project.

It is an effort to protect and expand a sanctuary where people can step away from the pressures of life, enter silence and begin the inward journey towards clarity, healing and transformation.

The new hall is expected to provide space for more than 200 people to meditate together while improving accommodation for visiting retreat participants. It will also allow Nisala to continue its charitable model of offering teachings, meals and accommodation on a donation basis.

A Place That Serves Beyond Its Walls

Nisala’s work extends far beyond residential retreats.

Over the years, the Foundation has introduced meditation and mindfulness practices to healthcare professionals, university students, academics, engineers, government employees, corporate teams, members of the Armed Forces, disabled Army personnel, young people and senior citizens.

Its meditation programs have reached individuals working in demanding environments where emotional pressure, responsibility and stress are part of everyday life.

At Nisala, meditation is not presented as an escape from life. It is offered as a practical path towards living with greater awareness, compassion, stability and inner strength.

Participants are given the opportunity to experience silence, structured meditation, simplicity and spiritual guidance in an environment dedicated entirely to inner development.

For some, the retreat may be the first time in years that they have truly stopped.

For others, it may become the beginning of an entirely new relationship with life.

Why Australia Matters

Australia is home to a deeply generous Sri Lankan community, as well as many individuals and spiritual networks that understand the value of meditation, mental well-being and compassionate service.

A contribution from Australia can help Nisala move closer to completing this important project. But financial support is not the only way to help.

Sharing the project with a meditation group, Buddhist association, yoga community, charitable organisation, workplace network or circle of friends may connect Nisala with someone who feels inspired to contribute.

One introduction could lead to a donor.

One shared article could reach a community.

One act of generosity could help create a place where thousands of people may find peace in the years ahead.

More Than Bricks and Cement

When a donor supports this project, they are not merely helping to construct a hall.

They are helping to create space for a person experiencing emotional exhaustion.

They are helping a young person discover inner stability.

They are helping a healthcare professional find calm after carrying the suffering of others.

They are helping someone who may feel lost, overwhelmed or spiritually disconnected enter a place of silence and begin again.

The expanded meditation hall will enable Nisala to welcome more people, improve retreat facilities and preserve its commitment to making meditation accessible regardless of financial background.

Supporters are invited to contribute any amount they are comfortable giving. Every donation becomes part of a larger act of service—a sanctuary built not for commercial gain, but for peace, healing and the well-being of future generations.

A Call to the Australian Community

Nisala Foundation is still far from reaching the funding required to complete the meditation hall and dormitory project.

The Foundation is therefore reaching out to Sri Lankans, meditators, spiritual communities and compassionate supporters across Australia.

Please consider making a donation or sharing this appeal within your personal, professional or spiritual networks.

A building created through generosity carries the blessings of every person who helped make it possible.

Together, we can create more than a meditation hall.

We can create a lasting refuge of silence, healing and inner transformation.
