Remembrance, unity and shared history features of Anzac Day ceremony

The Brookfield Showgrounds came alive on Friday, April 25, with a moving tribute to Anzac Day, commemorating the sacrifices of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women.

The event drew a large crowd from across the community, including veterans, serving personnel, local residents, and dignitaries. They gathered to honour the spirit of Anzac and reflect on the values of courage, mateship, and sacrifice.

The day began with a traditional dawn service, followed by a parade featuring a wide representation of ex-service organisations. Among the groups proudly participating was the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association (Queensland branch). Members marched in solidarity, proudly bearing their flags and paying homage to the Anzacs and all who served across the Commonwealth. Their presence symbolised the shared history and enduring bonds between nations that fought side by side during both world wars.

The Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association also made a significant contribution to the ceremony. Major General (Retired) Sardha Abeyratne and Captain (Retired) Uditha Liyanage, President of the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association of Queensland, laid floral wreaths. Their gesture honoured the memory of fallen comrades and reinforced the spirit of international brotherhood and shared sacrifice.

Their participation was particularly meaningful given the historic connection between Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) and the Gallipoli campaign. During World War I, although Ceylon did not deploy large combat units, the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps, a volunteer regiment composed mainly of British tea planters residing in Ceylon, was mobilised to serve alongside Allied forces. Members of the Corps were attached to Anzac units and participated in the Gallipoli campaign, enduring the same harsh conditions and heavy casualties.

This proud chapter in Sri Lanka’s military heritage highlights the longstanding ties between the nations.

As the sun rose higher, families enjoyed community activities, live music, and traditional refreshments, ensuring the legacy of the Anzacs continues to be passed down to younger generations.

The Brookfield ceremony once again proved to be a heartfelt and inclusive tribute, highlighting the importance of remembrance, unity, and shared history in today’s diverse Australia.
