Soul Sounds Returns to the Lionel Wendt with The Pop Era 01

Led by internationally acclaimed Music Director Soundarie David Rodrigo, the celebrated ensemble will revisit the greatest pop hits through the decades in a vibrant new production.

Colombo, Sri Lanka – June 2026: Sri Lanka’s premier female vocal ensemble, Soul Sounds, is set to return to the stage of the Lionel Wendt Theatre with The Pop Era, a spectacular musical celebration of the greatest pop hits of all time. Directed by renowned pianist, conductor and music director Soundarie David Rodrigo, the concert will take place on 12 July 2026 at 7.30 p.m., promising audiences an unforgettable evening of iconic music, powerhouse vocals and electrifying performances.

Designed as a journey through the decades, The Pop Era will bring together some of the world’s most beloved pop classics, reimagined through Soul Sounds’ signature blend of rich harmonies, dynamic arrangements and exceptional musicianship. From timeless favourites to chart-topping anthems that have defined generations, the production aims to celebrate the enduring appeal of pop music while showcasing the ensemble’s distinctive artistic style and remarkable versatility.

Speaking about the production, Soundarie David Rodrigo, Founder and Music Director of Soul Sounds, says, “Pop music has a unique ability to bring people together through shared memories and experiences. With The Pop Era, we wanted to create a concert that celebrates the songs that have shaped generations while presenting them through the unique sound and energy that audiences have come to expect from Soul Sounds. It is a celebration of music, nostalgia and connection, and we look forward to sharing this experience with our audiences.”

Founded under the direction of Soundarie David Rodrigo, Soul Sounds has become one of Sri Lanka’s most respected and internationally recognised musical ensembles. First gaining prominence as the Holy Family Convent Senior Choir, the group has grown from strength to strength over the years, and today comprises young women from diverse backgrounds and walks of life, united by a shared passion for music. Renowned for its versatility, Soul Sounds has built a repertoire that spans multiple genres, seamlessly moving from gospel and sacred music to jazz, pop, contemporary classics and choral works, earning acclaim both locally and internationally for its artistic excellence and innovative performances.

Among its many achievements, Soul Sounds represented Sri Lanka at the prestigious International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, where it secured runner-up positions in both the Youth Choir and Solo categories. The ensemble later won two Silver Medals at the World Choir Games in China and, most recently, brought home two Gold Medals at the World Choir Games in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2024. Soul Sounds has since performed across the globe, including concert tours and appearances in Australia, Austria, France, South Africa, the United States, Malaysia, India, Kuwait and China.

Over the years, Soul Sounds has built a reputation for presenting high-quality productions that appeal to diverse audiences. Concerts such as Sounds Like Pop, Totally 80’s, Totally 90’s, Totally Pop, All That Jazz, Born Free and Imagine have consistently drawn praise for their creativity, musical excellence and engaging performances. The ensemble has also collaborated with leading local and international musicians and performed alongside the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka on numerous occasions.

At the helm of Soul Sounds is Soundarie David Rodrigo, one of Sri Lanka’s most accomplished musicians and cultural leaders. A graduate of the Royal College of Music in London, she has performed internationally as a concert pianist and accompanist, and has played a pivotal role in elevating Sri Lanka’s presence in the international choral music arena. Her contributions to music and culture have been recognised through numerous honours, including the SAARC Woman of Achievement Award, the Zonta Award and the Bunka Award. She also serves as a jury member at international choral competitions and is widely recognised as one of the judges of Sri Lanka’s Got Talent.

The Pop Era is presented with the generous support of Mireka Seascape Residencies, Havelock City, Havelock City Mall, Cargills, 88.3 E FM and MOB – Ministry of Brands as the official costume partner for the production.

With its combination of beloved music, exceptional vocal talent and the proven track record of one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated ensembles, The Pop Era is set to be one of the standout musical events of 2026.
